  1. I've been listening to Capital breakfast for a past few days and can confirm it's a really good listen. However, it shows how strict the format is. Same music, same ads, time-restricted links, short songs. Jordan is great though.

And now I've switched to Radio 1 and Greg's doing some sort of 'sexy or not sexy' link. What a difference.

  2. I feel that Dotun Adebayo and his nighttime show doesn't get enough credit. I mean he's doing graveyard slot 5 days a week - I don't understand how he's functioning as a person! And his presentation style is unique, he makes the show sound like he's speaking only to you. I love to listen to it when I can't sleep.

  3. I have almost no doubt it is because of Jordan North starting at Capital. I mean most commercial radio stations have block of ads + news at the start of the hour and Radio 1 obviously wants to start playing music ahead of them. It can't be a coincidence that this change happened at the same time when rival radio station starts its new breakfast show and the next week the change is gone.

The main question is how they will meet the quota, as adding 5pm bulletin won't be enough.

  4. Well they must have something planned for him. Otherwise, he wouldn't be on Radio 1. Hope it's a BBC Sounds podcast and not a show on the radio...

I don't remember the case in the recent past when they'd get a presenter, let him do a few shows and that's it. Until now, every person (except for Christmas presenters) who did a few shows, was at least a cover presenter after that.

And there's an example of Jamie Lang, who's now on drive. Or Mollie King, who got a permanent show after being a stand in for a month or so. The only difference is that they're good and Danny Beard's... well not special. But in the past it didn't stop the management (look at Maya Jama)

  5. I liked her last show, but I don’t feel it had the same impact as Annie’s show. Also, I feel her tenure was quite short to be honest, so don’t understand what the sentiments are all about. I mean Annie did this show for 6 years and Zane Lowe for 12, compared to Clara’s 3 years.

Looking forward to Jack taking over from her - I think he has a lot of influence from Zane Lowe and we need that energy in 6pm slot.

I feel at this point the station needs new management and feels like management should be a five year term for a station like Radio 1.

I'm not sure about this. Radio is all about continuity and management changes every few years might break this, because every new boss would want to change something.

Moving Sam & Danni to weekend afternoons and replacing them on weekend breakfast with a solo presenter does feel like the more natural move. They've doubled up the presenters on Katie's old slot, so they may need to make a saving there. I don't really think 3 duos in a row is necessary.

They only started in September 2023, but I think that is largely irrelevant. These things change for the greater good.

Dev & Alice only did 6 months before they were swapped with Matt & Mollie back in 2018. Grimmy only did it for 9 months before they moved him to the evening slot.

And this move would probably happen in July, meaning their stint at weekend breakfast would be almost a year.

I really don't understand why people think this means Dean might be the next breakfast presenter, or even a stand in? Sure, he's done Breakfast a few times now – but the early breakfast presenter has never been the breakfast cover presenter on anything except an emergency basis (late presenter, really last minute sickness).

I've not enjoyed the afternoon show, but I don't mind Dean – yet it's hard to see this as anything but a lesser show.

Matt and Mollie were a comfortable breakfast duo because putting them on breakfast wouldn't disrupt the weekday schedule. Now, they don't have that choice, which means it has to be someone from the weekdays. I don't see Vick, Katie and Jamie, because three presenters could be too heavy in place of Greg. It can still be M&M, but also Dean.

Your point about early breakfast presenters not covering breakfast is fair, but Dean is not a traditional early breakfast presenter, as his profile is arguably higher than that of the usual early breakfast presenter, and he has already covered the breakfast show.

Not sure about Dean presenting breakfast permanently - with the current trends it must be at least a duo.

Yes it’s staying but moving to Wednesdays 8-10. I’m surprised Mollie is still presenting it, because it’s very rare that Radio 1 do double-shifting, let alone permanently. I’d have thought it would be the perfect time to give it to Maia Beth

Mollie seems to be loving presenting Future Pop though. I hope it won't be prerecorded as it was on Friday mornings.

Dean and Vicky's example serves as a reminder that duos should have some sort of connection and not just be thrown together randomly. When you look at other successful Radio 1 duos, you see that either it happened naturally over time (Scott and Chris, Matt and Molle) or they're really good mates (Sam and Danni, RMC). The only recent exception I would say is Vick and Jordan, who were thrown together randomly but managed to make it work.

Btw, I believe Dean and Vicky would be perfectly fine for commercial radio, where the links are more scripted. However, on the BBC, you must have a real connection to make it work.

doubling down on duos and going for celebrity names

If you compare presenter salaries published by the BBC, you'll see that a few years ago there were three R1 names: Scott Mills, Nick Grimshaw, and Greg James. Last year, there was only one - Greg. No one makes it even to the lowest £178,000 - £184,999 bracket, so I presume that two presenters on daytime cost roughly the same or even less than one in the past. But they're getting two presenters instead of one, and this means that they can do their shows on their own if someone's sick, which also saves money.

Also, some current presenters do only a few shows a week, and higher-paid weekday presenters are doing only Monday-Thursday, which I presume also saves money. I remember that Jordan was complaining some time ago that when he was doing only a few weekend shows a week, he was barely able to live in London. And now some shows are moving from London which also helps to save money, as the BBC can pay less to those people.

  12. I believe most of the changes were for good during Aled's tenure. I saw someone accuse Aled of letting Jordan go, but I think that's highly untrue. He was already doing the second biggest R1 show, and putting him on breakfast would also be a bad choice because it would mean letting Greg go. All in all, I think Aled's working with what's available money and people-wise. I'm just not sure about recurring features such as missions for the presenters and the overuse of the Anthems format.

  13. It would be logical if it were really the Capital breakfast. I mean it's still a prestigious show, and they get quite a lot of freedom. In addition, Jordan has no guarantee if he would get the R1 breakfast show in the future, and the money is probably better at Global.

And yes, I see Jamie and Vick as a temporary decision. It might work, but I wouldn't be surprised if after a year we see changes at drivetime. I think now it depends on whether Vick wants to stay at R1 for much longer.

This is fun. I mean there was the classic for years that Moyles hates music

Wasn't it the case that he didn't really like most of the playlist music he was playing on R1?

Argh! Not anthems!!! I was hoping this year it would be different. I literally cannot stand basically a whole week of anthems, it's lazy and boring. I guess I won't be listening for a 5th year straight, unfortunately.

I feel the same, but it's probably more convenient for them in terms of production staff as mixing could be done before Christmas and they can put less experienced staff and presenters on air. Plus people (except geeks) seem to like Anthems and the music scene is weird few weeks following Christmas as there not much new releases and Christmas songs are not suitable anymore.

Having said that, I remember that 'special' shows between Christmas and New Year's being really interesting and fun listen before they went all Anthems. It felt like there were almost no rules in the format during Scott's, Dev's, and Matt's shows. I'd love to have at least normal Breakfast show again during that period.
