1 June 2016: Nick Jonas talks hot tubs, neck pillows and an exceptionally specific pizza

Backstage with Nick Jonas

Scott played his interview with Nick Jonas from Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Exeter. Nick had arrived by helicopter after travel problems stopped him reaching an earlier Radio 1 appearance, then discussed meeting the Duchess of Cornwall, planning Meghan Trainor’s 21st birthday party and trying to fit small breaks into a diary without a proper holiday for another nine months.

His new album, Last Year Was Complicated, was accompanied by an unusually personal documentary series. A friend had interviewed him for two hours in the outdoor hot tub at the house he shared with Joe Jonas, and Nick admitted the heat and a couple of drinks had made him open up more than expected. He retained control of the finished programme, but said very little had been removed.

Nick also explained the less glamorous reality behind his steamy “Close” video. Rolling around on concrete left him and Tove Lo bruised, while the underwear shoots that preceded it had made him much less concerned about changing in front of colleagues. His preferred post-shoot treat was a wholewheat pizza with fig spread, prosciutto, rocket and Parmesan, an answer so specific that Scott and Chris struggled with several of its American terms.

Travel remained a theme. Nick said Demi Lovato collected hotel pillows, while he had repeatedly bought neck pillows at airports and forgotten them at home. When he moved house, a helper opened a cupboard and declared that he had never seen so many belonging to one person.

A third Bangers victory

Chris entered Battle of the Bangers two-nil down and increasingly suspicious that Scott had found an outside source of good songs. Costume designer Jemima heard Scott offer the Saturdays and Flo Rida’s “Higher” against Chris’s old-school choice, Pharrell Williams and Jay-Z’s “Frontin’”.

Because she was heading out with friends for a birthday, Jemima chose the Saturdays. Scott celebrated a three-nil lead, while Chris accused him of discovering an entire world of music that had somehow remained unavailable during previous weeks.

Bamboleo and Colin’s girlfriend

The short working week still received a full Bamboleo Wednesday. Listeners requested the terrible school orchestra from an old programme, and the extended gap filled with revision breaks, workshops, vans, swimming pools and one listener “Bamboleoing his spanners off”.

Alice Levine then joined Real or No Real. The headline fact revealed that Colin the Caterpillar had entered the dating world with a girlfriend named Connie as he celebrated his 25th birthday. Scott had assumed Colin might be gay, leaving Chris to point out that they were discussing a chocolate cake rather than a real caterpillar’s private life.
