6 April 2016: A listener buys a car from Scott’s dad

Pete Mills closes the deal

Listener Betsy emailed after her family found a reasonably priced Kia Sportage and took it for a test drive with the salesman, Pete Mills. During the journey, Pete asked whether they listened to Radio 1 and revealed that Scott was his son. The family bought the car, although Betsy admitted the connection may have helped.

Pete then produced a signed Scott Mills photograph. Scott confessed that his father periodically asked him to collect stacks of Radio 1 publicity cards from reception, sign them and send them to the New Forest. The garage also displayed an Alan Titchmarsh poster and a record-sales award that Scott had nowhere else to keep.

Chris admired the operation, imagining Pete lowering the price and throwing in a signed picture to complete a negotiation. Scott remembered the large “Vote Scott Mills” sign placed on the car lot during Strictly Come Dancing, but insisted the discussion was not a paid advertisement.

Laura Whitmore returns to Bingo

Laura Whitmore arrived for day three of the returning Innuendo Bingo week. She had previously protected herself with a tuxedo T-shirt and again understood exactly how wet the game could become. Scott and Chris introduced a “no poncho” rule to stop experienced guests reducing the damage.

Laura faced Chris through clips drawn from television and radio, while viewers took the risk of watching live in university libraries. By the end she had fully justified Scott’s inevitable “Laura Wetmore” joke and added another substantial soaking to the week.

A difficult day for Bangers

Scott faced unusually fierce criticism for his Battle of the Bangers selection. One listener wondered whether second-hand-car salesman Pete Mills had chosen it, giving Chris another opportunity to bring Scott’s father back into the programme.

Clara Amfo played Real or No Real and defeated Scott by 20 points to 10. The show then moved on to Thursday’s encounter with Greg James, while Laura’s complete Bingo appearance went online.
