Nao takes third place
Annie Mac returned to the Breakfast Show with number three in the BBC Music Sound of 2016. Nao joined her in the studio, discussed the reaction to her music and introduced “Bad Blood” as Radio 1’s Track of the Day.
Scott briefly confused the Sound of 2016 programme with The Sound of Music, while Annie tried to keep the announcement suitably serious. The countdown had now moved from the tied fifth place through Blossoms at four to Nao at three, with Huw Stephens due to reveal the runner-up the following morning.
Workout Wednesday
Radio 1’s Workout Wednesday playlist prompted an investigation into whether the people filling gyms in January really possessed more willpower than Scott and Chris. Chris was sent to a BBC gym carrying sponge cakes in an oversized foil turkey tray and told to offer them to people while they exercised.
He approached a man working hard on a treadmill and presented cake as a treat or cheat-day reward. The runner would only consider taking one for later, which broke the experiment’s rules, and resisted even when Chris held it near him and demanded that he look at it, lick it and think about what he could have eaten.
Chris eventually left a cake beside the treadmill and ran away. Scott concluded that the gym-goer had considerably more willpower than either of them, while Chris returned with the remaining cakes so the team could eat them instead.
The first Bamboleo Wednesday of 2016 then brought listeners into a nationwide midweek dance. Clips from the week, including the furious Come Dine with Me speech and Chris chanting “lick the cake”, were folded into the celebration.
