Blossoms at number four
Scott and Chris continued their Breakfast Show week with Huw Stephens revealing number four in the BBC Music Sound of 2016. Stockport band Blossoms arrived in full and celebrated “At Most a Kiss” receiving its first Radio 1 play as Track of the Day.
The band discussed recording an album, rehearsing in a scaffolding yard owned by drummer Joe Donovan’s grandfather and beginning the year with shows including a January date in the Netherlands. Their appearance also allowed them to mention the limited vinyl release which had given them a very particular Christmas number one.
Take your money and get off my property
The programme became obsessed with Peter Marsh’s reaction to losing Come Dine with Me. He accused winner Jane of ruining his night, compared her grace to a reversing dump truck without tyres and ordered her to take the prize money and leave his property. The spectacularly bad response immediately became the show’s first essential television clip of the year and was repeatedly dropped into unrelated links.
Listeners who had missed the festive programmes also asked to hear Scott’s interview with Jennifer Lawrence. She had spoken about Joy, awards ceremonies, New Year’s Eve and the effort involved in maintaining her friendship with Amy Schumer when Jennifer always seemed to be the one travelling to visit her.
Chris listened for the way Scott’s voice changed around famous guests. After previously catching him becoming unusually posh with Eddie Redmayne, he now suspected Scott had drifted towards a more American delivery with Jennifer. Scott denied consciously changing anything, although his enthusiastic responses gave Chris plenty of evidence.
The day ended with Real or No Real, including a false claim about an edible selfie printer and the real revelation that Richard Osman had spent the opening days of the year running a chocolate-bar World Cup on Twitter.
