7 January 2016: Deborah Meaden rejects gravy butter on Instant Dragons’ Den

Scott’s January diet

Scott had responded to online health advice by buying a blue plate, having read that the colour could reduce his appetite. Its unusually large size rather undermined the portion-control plan. He had also switched to soya milk, only to produce a coffee with an unappealing layer floating across the top.

Chris thought Scott was trying to change too many things at once and preferred Lord Sugar’s simpler suggestion of eating with very small cutlery. Scott’s increasingly questionable health tips became more useful when they generated a listener’s business pitch.

Gravy butter

Kirstie went directly to Deborah Meaden’s home phone on Instant Dragons’ Den. Her product was gravy butter, designed to spread on the cold-meat sandwiches made from the remains of a roast dinner. Friends had supported it, and listeners quickly declared that they would buy it, but Deborah wanted to know whether novelty interest could ever become a sustainable market.

Deborah liked the straightforward name but did not like the product enough to invest. Kirstie was out, although the response outside the Den was so enthusiastic that Scott and Chris wondered whether the show had accidentally given away a viable idea.

Alessia Cara and awkward films

Huw Stephens revealed 19-year-old Alessia Cara as number two in the BBC Music Sound of 2016. She performed “Here”, discussed the sudden prospect of beginning a tour within days and received messages from listeners who had already learnt every word.

In Real or No Real, the show discovered that a website really did warn people about films containing scenes likely to become uncomfortable when watched with parents. Scott remembered taking his mother to Bridesmaids and realising from its opening moments that he had made a serious mistake.
