Scott and Joanne reunite
Scott felt lost after suddenly moving from daily Strictly rehearsals back to ordinary life. He and Joanne Clifton still exchanged several messages a day, but the abrupt end of a partnership that had occupied almost every hour of the previous weeks felt strange.
Their reunion gave Scott a rare chance to play Innuendo Bingo properly. He had once taken part in a shorter edition with Zayn Malik, but this would be the complete game, with Chris presenting and controlling the clips.
Scott also returned from the shops with a jumper carrying one large word: “Wang”. The Alexander Wang collection had caused such chaos that he had fought through a crowd simply to buy the joke.
Strictly Come Bingo reverses the roles
Chris introduced “the handsome Danny Howard” and Joanne against an insulting description of himself, then sent the former dance partners into the Live Lounge. Joanne had eaten Popchips shortly before the game and warned that crumbs might remain, while Scott became visibly anxious despite years of telling other people how easy the rules were.
The clips included Vanessa Feltz buying a new rabbit, Ed Sheeran reading a listener’s confession about his wife’s taste for blue-veined cheese, Len Goodman and Arlene Phillips sharing a caravan, Davina McCall’s Majorcan lardy cake and Denise Robertson trying a flu jab on This Morning.
Joanne attacked decisively and left Scott unable to see through the water. He experienced it running into his clothes and ears, realised he had not brought spare underwear and emerged feeling as though he had been swimming. Chris enjoyed presenting but insisted Scott now needed to play more often.
Sixth-date success
Jonathan returned after asking for help with a sixth date. The advice had worked sufficiently for him to secure a first kiss after a fireworks display, and another meeting was already arranged. He still had not told the woman that their dating progress was being discussed on Radio 1.
Scott and Chris immediately complicated the happy update by asking whether he had become only a winter boyfriend and whether the relationship was Facebook official. Jonathan thought they were now together, although the label had not yet been discussed.
Monty the Penguin needs a late-night test
The new John Lewis Christmas advert featuring Monty the Penguin had divided the office. Scott liked Tom Odell’s version of John Lennon’s “Real Love” but did not find the film as emotional as the previous year’s advert.
He suspected that an office in daylight was the wrong environment. Listeners were asked to watch it later, preferably after an evening out, record their immediate reactions as voice memos and email them to the show. Tom Fletcher had already been filmed crying, while Scott and Chris waited to discover whether tiredness, darkness and a trip to the pub would make Monty more powerful.
Greg James finished with Real or No Real, recalling the disastrous mock wedding he had hosted at the previous year’s Student Radio Awards. The couple broke up during the ceremony and the groom later tried to confront him, making it one feature Greg had no intention of repeating.
