7 November 2014: The Instagram Game begins with Miley Cyrus and Tom Fletcher

Chango brings romantic apparatus

One of Chris’s friends used his girlfriend’s birthday party as an opportunity to impress the other women attending. Chango the Beast had checked the Facebook guest list in advance, bought a birthday card despite never normally giving cards and presented it publicly during a quiet moment.

He later admitted privately that the thoughtful gesture had been planned entirely for the benefit of the women watching. Scott admired the primitive simplicity of arriving with “apparatus” designed to make him look considerate.

Instagram becomes a radio game

The show launched an audio version of Instagram. A narrator described five photographs from one celebrity account, leaving Scott and Chris to identify the owner without seeing any of them.

The first account showed a woman eating a strawberry, wearing an oversized sequinned coat beside Sydney Harbour Bridge, listening to Elvis after a large takeaway pizza, playing a Super Nintendo at four in the morning and straddling an inflatable banana in a leopard-print leotard. Scott and Chris moved through several incorrect pop stars before the answer became suddenly obvious: Miley Cyrus.

They performed better with a man whose photographs included a poor Photoshop with Jedward, an exhausted morning with an eight-month-old baby, a McBusted magazine cover and a charity ice-bucket pose. This time they correctly identified Tom Fletcher.

The penguin reactions arrive

Chris completed the experiment set the previous afternoon. After a night out, he watched the Monty the Penguin advert in a taxi and recorded a commentary dominated by buffering, an argument about whether Tom Odell had written the song and a business idea involving thousands of cuddly penguins.

Listeners had been more obedient. One girlfriend began by declaring her love of penguins and Christmas, then concluded that she preferred last year’s advert. Others focused on the penguin’s legs or complained that the animals were not real. Barry supplied the most enthusiastic running commentary and was overwhelmed when the boy gave Monty a companion.

Ready to Run goes around the world

One Direction’s “Ready to Run” had reached the top of download charts in countries around the world through album pre-orders alone. Scott played it ahead of the release of Four and remembered the band’s recent visit.

The show also looked ahead to another Children in Need school takeover at Tendring Technology College, where Scott and Chris would visit lessons and Radio 1 DJs would stage a school disco. Chris insisted that Scott would perform the crab dance despite Scott repeatedly refusing.

Gary Lucy and Chris Smith joined Real or No Real. Among the true claims were a French café charging rude customers more for coffee and the fact that the engineer who repaired Danny Howard’s satellite television was Chipmunk’s brother.
