Chris takes control
Scott opened from a secret location where he was waiting for One Direction. Chris remained at Radio 1 with access to the buttons and announced his temporary programme as the Pet Shop Boys Show, while refusing to reveal where the interview was taking place.
Fans listened around the world because it was the band’s first interview of the day about Four. Scott briefly worried that a photograph of the phone containing preview tracks might have retained location data, but the venue remained secure and the five members eventually arrived.
Four is made on the road
The band said they had written on almost every song and regarded it as the album of which they were most proud. Individual favourites included “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” and “Fireproof”, although Harry Styles hesitated over naming a future single before its announcement.
Much of the record had been made during the American tour. Mobile studios travelled with them, allowing vocals to be recorded in hotel rooms, backstage spaces and a truck built for the purpose.
Only three microphones were available. Liam Payne initially attempted to direct them towards each speaker before Louis Tomlinson took over, while the others raised hands and announced their names in an increasingly unsuccessful effort to create order.
Life inside secret locations
One Direction described being unable to leave hotels when fans surrounded the entrances. Niall Horan found confinement particularly difficult and sometimes stayed awake into the early morning watching golf when going outside was impossible.
Scott asked how a fan could earn a follow on Twitter. The answer was largely random, although an impressive drawing or a polite message might catch somebody’s attention. That offered little help to the thousands asking Scott to arrange follows on their behalf.
The conversation also covered winter girlfriends, golf trousers, online security and Zayn Malik’s unexpectedly basic telephone. Its ringtone and copy of Snake looked unlike the device of a multi-millionaire pop star. Scott received permission to dance at Zayn and Perrie Edwards’s wedding, even if neither expected him to accept seriously.
Holding the fort becomes literal
Traffic delayed Scott’s return. Chris played the Streets, postponed Bumbleleo Wednesday and threatened to reveal one digit of Scott’s mobile number for every song he missed. Scott called just as the plan began to sound real and resumed control.
Alice Levine played Real or No Real. The game confirmed that Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn could not drive and that members of One Direction had been tested for chlamydia after being urinated on by koalas during a visit to an animal sanctuary.
