Back to afternoons on transfer deadline day
Scott and Chris returned to their afternoon slot after two weeks on Breakfast. Their first day back coincided with football’s transfer deadline, so Chris attempted to keep Scott informed about Radamel Falcao’s proposed move to Manchester United and the traditional wait for Harry Redknapp to appear through a car window.
Scott suggested that he could manage Watford with Chris operating as the brains behind him. That arrangement sounded more plausible to Scott than learning the actual mechanics of the transfer window, although Strictly rehearsals meant he would already be away from Radio 1 on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The X Factor adds Scott’s extra brass
An exceptionally cheerful contestant named Steve had struggled to begin his performance of Olly Murs’s “Dance with Me Tonight” on The X Factor. When he eventually sang, the backing track contained a brass flourish that sounded exactly like one of Scott’s unnecessary trumpet additions.
Listeners had immediately asked whether Scott had secretly altered the programme. He denied any involvement but replayed the flourish repeatedly, delighted that primetime television had independently arrived at one of his favourite ways to interfere with a song.
Washed Up reaches ITV by another route
Scott and Chris revisited Washed Up, their rejected television pilot about the activity ignored by cookery programmes: cleaning everything afterwards. They had filmed themselves at a sink and placed the three-and-a-half-minute result online, but no broadcaster had wanted it.
ITV had now launched Who’s Doing the Dishes?, hosted by Brian McFadden. Scott regarded a programme built around celebrities, meals and washing up as suspiciously close to their proposal and prepared to inspect the first edition with Shane Richie before deciding how offended to become.
Kevin McHale enjoys the attention
Chris had previously embarrassed Scott by loudly identifying him on the Underground. Scott hated the attention, so the show tried the same basic experiment with Kevin McHale from Glee to see whether an American celebrity would react differently.
At the Oxford Circus crossing, Chris ran into the road with Kevin and shouted that he was an actual famous person with lots of money. Rather than escaping, Kevin joined in and appeared to enjoy the whole performance. The result supported Chris’s theory that Scott’s horror had been especially British.
Greg James returned for Real or No Real. The genuine facts included Kasabian’s Tom Meighan buying a BMX used in E.T., Will Smith turning down The Matrix for Wild Wild West, and Danny Howard distributing sunglasses bearing his own face at summer gigs.
