Curry arrives at 07:30
Scott and Chris marked their final Breakfast Show by opening Curry Club. Nobody had ordered food the night before, so a member of the team went to a supermarket for mild, medium and spicy options.
Eating was forbidden in the studio. The curry was therefore arranged on a picnic blanket in the Live Lounge, making the early meal look like an indoor campsite. Scott had already burned enough energy at dance rehearsals to justify it.
The smell spread through Radio 1 while listeners reported their own unusual breakfasts. What began as a passing craving became a full event because nobody on the programme knew how to leave a small idea alone.
Keith Lemon writes for children
Keith Lemon arrived dressed for a television appearance and discussed two books due in the autumn. One was a children’s book about a beaver and an elephant renting a house from a sweaty fox.
The stories sent the animals to Mauritius, through Christmas and out shopping for shoes. Keith was about to record the audiobook but had not settled on their voices. The elephant would be foolish; the beaver might sound like one of his older Bo’ Selecta! characters.
Scott questioned whether Keith was an appropriate children’s author. Keith pointed out that his adult material came after 22:00 and said the book represented a different side of his work.
He expected Mel B’s return to The X Factor to create material for Celebrity Juice and discussed whether old Bo’ Selecta! characters should make cameos in a new sketch show. Jonathan Ross had advised him to concentrate on new ideas, while Keith knew viewers still wanted familiar faces.
Strictly secrets and celebrity friends
Keith already knew Caroline Flack was taking part in Strictly because she had texted him before the announcement and asked him not to tell anybody. He expected her to dance well, then realised that saying so could damage her underdog status.
Scott had completed a group rehearsal but still had no individual lessons. Keith judged him mainly by his legs and shoulders, which was not quite the technical assessment Scott wanted.
They also discussed celebrity contacts. Keith regarded Gino D’Acampo as a real friend, Kylie Minogue as somebody he adored after only a few meetings and Shane Richie as a man who had repeatedly invited him to Ireland. His phone offered a surprisingly complicated map of genuine friendships, acquaintances and people he simply hoped liked him.
A listener played Real or No Real, before the show considered Jimmy Kimmel reuniting the women from Friends for fan fiction suspiciously soon after Scott’s Matthew Lewis performance. Scott chose to regard the similarity as an honour.
Nick Grimshaw returned to Breakfast on Monday. Scott and Chris would go back to afternoons, but Scott’s programme now had a new running story: rehearsing for Strictly Come Dancing in public.
