Rixton arrive on Breakfast
Rixton joined Scott and Chris on the final morning of the first Breakfast week. The band’s “Me and My Broken Heart” had become a regular Radio 1 track, but Jake Roche was invited in for something much less comfortable than an ordinary promotional interview.
Scott brought back the speech jammer. Jake wore headphones that played his own voice back after a short delay, interrupting the connection between thought and speech. Simple sentences became slow, slurred and unexpectedly difficult.
Jake has to phone his dad
The test became harder when Scott made Jake place a real telephone call. His father was Shane Richie, known to millions as Alfie Moon in EastEnders, and therefore less likely than most parents to ignore a son suddenly speaking in a bizarre voice.
Jake attempted to maintain the conversation while the delayed audio forced him to repeat sounds and lose the ends of sentences. Shane had to work out what his son wanted without seeing the headphones or the studio setup.
The family connection made the feature more than a technical demonstration. Jake was trying to sound convincing to somebody who knew his normal speech immediately, while Scott and Chris watched the delay undo every effort to regain control.
By the end, the jammer had done exactly what it always did: a confident performer had been reduced to concentrating intensely on the smallest words. Scott and Chris completed their first full Breakfast week and prepared to return after the bank holiday.
