Danger opera wins a place at the Fun and Filth Cabaret
Chris’s habit of photographing his meals came under scrutiny after he took another picture of cake and continued discussing the day’s lunch options. Scott estimated that food accounted for about 80 per cent of the photographs on Chris’s phone and recalled him documenting a currywurst as soon as they arrived in Vienna. Chris insisted lunch was an underrated part of the day, while listeners defended the idea that a meal was not complete until somebody had created an artistic record of it.
Show introducer Leanne revealed that she regularly sleepwalked without any clothes on. She had appeared naked at the end of her parents’ bed, taken a bath mat into the communal area outside an ex-boyfriend’s flat and walked from a hotel room to reception wearing only nipple tassels. Laura then described sending friends messages about imaginary pigeons while asleep, while Grant admitted sleep-tweeting Chris Martin to warn him that he and his girlfriend would be late for dinner. The team decided that sleep texting was real, although it also provided a useful excuse for regrettable messages.
Scott announced the Wednesday line-up for the following week’s Fun and Filth Cabaret. Rhys Darby, Up & Over It and Abandoman would be joined by beatboxer Shlomo and Police Academy sound-effects star Michael Winslow, while Grimmy still had to devise his own performance. Emma Willis agreed to guest-host and recalled her former work as a magician’s assistant, which had involved sharing boxes with rabbits and wearing a suitably sparkly outfit. Scott also proposed a separate Edinburgh challenge in which Chris would attempt to eat several deep-fried Mars bars against the clock.
Dan and Phil introduced two more acts hoping to appear from home during the cabaret. Tim “Livewire” Shieff made a peanut butter and jam sandwich while holding a handstand on his kitchen floor, demonstrating both free-running strength and surprisingly tidy spreading. Nora and Peter followed with what they called danger opera: Nora sang while Peter juggled oranges in their garden, with knives, fire and beds of nails promised for the full version. Scott and Grimmy admired Tim’s potential for upside-down cookery but chose the gloriously strange opera act for Edinburgh.
In Oh, What’s Occurring?, the team had to identify genuine Olympic songs. Celine Dion’s “The Power of the Dream” had been used at Atlanta 1996 and Whitney Houston’s “One Moment in Time” was written for Seoul 1988, while Heather Small’s “Proud” and a suspiciously inspirational Billie Piper track had never been official themes. Jackie Chan really had contributed to Beijing’s welcoming song, leaving the programme with another selection of unlikely Olympic facts before its Edinburgh preparations continued.
