The Wanted bring American success and Innuendo Bingo
Listener John began the show from his snack bar with the story of being thrown out of a nightclub for trying to meet Jedward while carrying a pineapple. He had been inspired by Calvin Harris interrupting the twins’ X Factor performance with a pineapple on his head, but club staff removed both John and the fruit. A local newspaper later covered his “pineapple prank”, prompting listeners to supply their own increasingly tenuous stories involving Jedward, pineapples and drag queens.
Grimmy divided The Wanted into two groups for their visit. Tom Parker, Nathan Sykes and Siva Kaneswaran discussed the intensity of breaking America, the endless airports and the fortunate timing of a new British boy-band wave. They had occasionally crossed paths with One Direction during promotion and joked about forming one enormous group in which Grimmy handled the lead vocals while everybody else performed synchronised steps.
The group also discussed having a song on the soundtrack to Ice Age 4, although Grimmy pretended they had written and directed the film themselves. His lack of knowledge about the series forced the band to explain its mammoths, sabre-toothed animals and unconventional family. They recommended it as a family film while Grimmy tried to turn their earnest description into an emotional statement about belonging.
Max George and Jay McGuiness then played Innuendo Bingo. They initially survived clips asking where all the lesbians had gone and discussing a tennis player without “a big weapon”, but references to Carol Vorderman’s small triangular garden, balls popping out, a windy muff and Edith Bowman’s “puffball” finally broke them. Max ended the game crying with laughter as water came through his nose.
Greg James reported from another listener’s home during his Scotland trip, while Grimmy replayed the increasingly outrageous allegations made about the previous night’s stay. In Dear Grimmy, listeners proposed shouting “Go on, pigs” at Wimbledon and questioned whether Pudsey was really a person inside a dog suit. An altered online list of So Solid Crew members then expanded into dozens of invented names, including Phil Neville, David Cameron, Mrs Goggins and Scrooge McDuck.
