Mae Muller will represent the UK
Scott returned from BBC Breakfast in Salford after helping reveal the UK’s 2023 Eurovision entry.
Mae Muller would perform I Wrote a Song in Liverpool.
Scott said Sam Ryder had proved that the UK could succeed when it entered the right artist and song.
He wanted listeners to support Mae with the same enthusiasm.
Mae said Eurovision was a major step up from anything she had done before and promised a large dance performance with choreography and strong visual staging.
Sam Ryder had already sent her voice notes containing advice from his own experience.
Scott had recorded a secret interview with Mae before the announcement and admitted he was relieved no longer to have to conceal the news.
Mystic Meg remembered
Scott paid tribute to astrologer Mystic Meg, who had died at 80.
He replayed the elaborate predictions she used to deliver before National Lottery draws, involving star signs, occupations, names and colours.
Scott admitted the format would be difficult to explain to a younger viewer because the predictions rarely identified an actual winner or set of numbers.
Owain Wyn Evans’s birthday
Owain joined Scott on his 39th birthday.
He planned to begin celebrating earlier than usual because his new Early Breakfast hours had shifted his entire day.
The celebrations would involve what he described as a “bijou glass of effervescence”, although not while working.
Owain shared his birthday with Oscar Isaac, Stacey Dooley, Juliette Binoche and John Cale.
Owain’s vintage disco lights
Owain revealed that he collected vintage disco lighting.
The hobby began after asking his parents for turntables and a mixer when he was around 11.
He gradually added CD players, smoke machines, robotic lights and older effects that consumed a worrying amount of electricity.
Scott said he wanted to visit and see the collection.
Both presenters had started young: Owain had been involved in hospital radio, while Scott earned pocket money DJing local discos around Southampton and Portsmouth.
The Birthday Game
Owain’s first spin was Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of the Heart, number one on his birthday in 1983.
Scott warned him that many contestants rejected strong first options and later regretted it.
Owain accepted Bonnie immediately because he loved her voice and Jim Steinman’s music.
His unused second choice would have been Chico’s It’s Chico Time.
The unused compulsory third song would have been Britney Spears’ Toxic.
Owain said he loved Britney and had even won Celebrity Mastermind with her as his specialist subject, but remained happy with Bonnie Tyler.
Arielle Free’s challenge
Scott spoke to his former Radio 1 colleague Arielle Free during her Comic Relief challenge.
Arielle was DJing and cycling around five cities across five days, aiming to complete 50 hours on a group bike weighing around one and a half tonnes before passengers and equipment were added.
Snow and wind in Liverpool had made the challenge especially difficult.
Scott compared it with his treadmill challenge and admitted Arielle’s version looked worse.
The Music Police
Simon remembered a melody but had no useful lyrics or artist details.
Scott and listeners continued submitting possibilities, but the transcript leaves the case unresolved.
Handover
Scott handed over after another celebration of Mae Muller’s Eurovision song and Owain’s decision to keep his first Birthday Game spin.
