8 March 2023: Mimi Webb remembers hearing herself on the radio for the first time

International Women’s Day

Scott marked International Women’s Day with new music and listener messages celebrating women who had inspired them.

He also revisited Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins’ performance of I Know Him So Well after Mel heard it unexpectedly on Radio 2.

Mel remembered the pair laughing through rehearsals because of their costumes and admitted she was not entirely proud of the finished performance.

Who should play the Super Bowl?

Scott continued trying to find a British act capable of taking over the Super Bowl halftime show.

Suggestions included Michael Ball and Alfie Boe, Dua Lipa, Jane McDonald and even the Muppets performing Bohemian Rhapsody.

Scott imagined a show built around British female artists, with Adele flying into the stadium, Dua Lipa on a tightrope and Becky Hill, Ellie Goulding and Ella Henderson appearing during the set.

The Birthday Game: Nigel

Nigel from Oxfordshire had retired around seven years earlier and spent part of his time caring for dogs being trained by the charity Dogs for Good.

The dogs stayed with Nigel and his wife Pam while learning the skills needed to support people in the community.

Some of the dogs were travelling to Crufts to take part in demonstrations.

Nigel shared his birthday with Gary Numan, Gyles Brandreth, Tom Chaplin and Kit Connor.

His first spin was Tom Jones’s It’s Not Unusual, number one in 1965. Nigel rejected it as slightly before his preferred era.

The second was Flo Rida featuring Kesha with Right Round, number one in 2009. He rejected that too.

His compulsory third song was Céline Dion’s Think Twice.

Nigel said it was not the song he would have chosen, but his wife was dancing in the background and Scott dedicated it to Pam.

Mimi Webb

Mimi Webb returned to speak to Scott after the release of her debut album Amelia, which was Radio 2’s Album of the Week.

Scott recalled playing one of Mimi’s first songs during his Radio 1 show.

Mimi had pulled into motorway services on the M20 and filmed herself hearing her own music on the radio for the first time.

She remembered shaking with nerves and described it as a moment neither she nor her family could believe was happening.

Amelia and her younger self

Mimi said the album was not only about relationships or heartbreak.

See You Soon represented hope and positivity, while The Other Side was about leaving a situation feeling stronger.

The title track was written as a letter to her younger self.

Mimi encouraged people to listen closely to its message about confidence and self-belief.

She said the album also suited International Women’s Day because she wanted women to support one another and help each other feel confident.

Life away from the stage

Scott asked whether Mimi was looking after herself during the intense travelling and promotion.

She said she had settled into her London flat and was making sure she ate properly and found time to rest.

Scott contrasted the version of Mimi wearing six-inch heels at the BRIT Awards with the version at home in pyjamas reading a book and cooking spaghetti bolognese.

Mimi said she was learning to enjoy the success rather than constantly worrying about what came next.

Meeting Harry Styles

Mimi had repeatedly said in interviews that she hoped to meet Harry Styles at the BRIT Awards.

On the red carpet, Harry tapped her on the shoulder and told her he loved House on Fire.

They later had a longer conversation.

Mimi described him as kind and inspiring, although she worried he might think she was slightly obsessed.

Eurovision rumours

Scott asked directly whether Mimi would represent the UK at Eurovision.

She said she loved the contest and watched it every year, but confirmed she was not the 2023 entrant.

She did not rule out taking part at some point in the future.

Handover

Scott handed over after promising to solve Simon’s Music Police mystery and celebrate Owain Wyn Evans’s birthday the following afternoon.
