Spam Appreciation Week reaches Hawaii
Scott ended Spam Appreciation Week by speaking to Barbara Campbell in Honolulu.
Hawaii was described as the largest consumer of Spam in the United States, with almost seven million tins eaten each year.
Barbara linked its popularity to the Second World War, when the canned meat became familiar to soldiers and local families.
Spam was sold in numerous flavours and was even available with eggs at Hawaiian branches of McDonald’s.
Waikiki Spam Jam
Barbara organised Waikiki Spam Jam, which closed a main street and filled it with restaurants, entertainment stages and Spam-based dishes.
The event expected between 25,000 and 30,000 visitors.
One popular dish was Spam musubi: rice topped with browned Spam and wrapped in nori.
Barbara said people carried it while hiking or surfing.
Scott was surprised by the festival’s scale and said he wanted to attend its 20th year.
A listener later revealed that she had accidentally encountered Spam Jam during a family trip in 2017 and described it as one of the holiday’s highlights.
Arielle Free completes her challenge
Scott celebrated Arielle Free raising more than £500,000 for Comic Relief.
She had completed 50 hours of DJing and cycling across five cities despite freezing conditions and heavy snow.
Scott hoped she was still asleep after finishing.
The Birthday Game: Michelle
Michelle turned 57 and ran a family fish-and-chip shop with her husband Matt.
She admitted the smell of the shop reached clothes and hair, although she hoped it was not noticeable from a distance.
Friday was the busiest day of the week, and Scott encouraged regular customers to wish her a happy birthday.
Michelle shared her birthday with Olivia Wilde, Chuck Norris and Sharon Stone.
Her first spin was Years & Years’ King, number one in 2015. Michelle rejected it.
The second was Kylie Minogue’s I Should Be So Lucky. She called it too cheesy and rejected that too.
Her compulsory final spin was Boyzone’s version of When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going.
Michelle said it was not her favourite but still preferred it to Kylie.
Scott sent the balloon for display in the chip shop.
Country to Country
The Country to Country festival began in London, Glasgow and Dublin.
Thomas Rhett suggested Niall Horan might appear with him on stage.
Scott looked ahead to Radio 2’s weekend coverage and presented a country-themed Wonder Years.
The sequence included Shania Twain and other country favourites from successive years.
