Christmas is officially on
Radio 2’s festive season had begun after Mariah Carey performed the station’s ceremonial Christmas switch-on.
Scott celebrated the return of daily Christmas songs and a newly announced festive single from Jedward.
He also highlighted Tupperware Pete’s seasonal reworking of his handheld-blender sales pitch.
The Birthday Game: Mary
Mary from Taunton turned 37 and ran a timber yard.
She was spending the day in Lyme Regis with her husband while her mother-in-law looked after the children.
Mary wanted a classic boy-band ballad or 1990s pop.
Her first spin was Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. She rejected it.
The second was S Club 7’s Have You Ever, the 2001 Children in Need single.
Mary accepted it because choosing otherwise would have gone against everything she believed about pop.
Her unused third song was Olly Murs’ Troublemaker.
She remained very happy with S Club 7.
Gary Barlow
Gary Barlow joined Scott to discuss his 2025 Songbook tour.
The show would revisit music from across his career and take him around the country again shortly after Take That’s latest tour.
Scott joked that Gary appeared determined to spend as little time at home as possible.
The forgotten Take That perfume
Scott asked Gary about a 1990s fragrance called Pray.
Gary initially insisted that it had probably been unofficial merchandise.
Scott found packaging carrying a message from the band describing it as their official perfume and apparently signed by Gary, Jason, Mark, Robbie and Howard.
Gary still denied remembering it.
After the interview, he messaged Scott to confirm that the perfume had indeed been official.
Scott accepted that Take That had released so much merchandise that Gary could not reasonably remember all of it 30 years later.
Handover
Scott handed over after playing Take That’s Pray — the song rather than the fragrance.
