27 September 2007: Dick and Dom Read the Texts, and “The Ladies Bras” Song Debuts

Dick and Dom step in last-minute to read out the show’s daily text messages, while Whisby’s novelty one-hit wonder “The Ladies Bras” gets its radio premiere — and Scott sets the team a competitive challenge to book better guests, with a thousand-pound bonus on the line.

After a celebrity guest cancels at the last minute (revealed to be George Michael, much to Scott’s irritation), Dick and Dom, who happen to be walking past the studio, are roped in to perform the regular Wednesday text-reading slot. As they perform the texts in various comedic voices and accents, there’s running debate over who is actually speaking — the team trying to distinguish between the two by listening for clues. The texts themselves are a mixed bag of listener messages, some sweet, some awkward, many unfinished or garbled.

The episode’s main event is the debut of “The Ladies Bras,” a novelty song by artist Whisby and producer Johnny Trump. Playing over the original “The Gong” theme from Dawn of the Dead, it became a surprise chart hit after Danny Baker played it repeatedly on BBC London Radio. Scott interviews Whisby about the track’s unlikely genesis — a spontaneous studio creation — and its chart trajectory (number 70 on some charts). Scott pledges to help push it higher, and Whisby sets an ambitious target of number 8, though they settle on trying for number 17.

Frustrated by what he sees as a dip in guest quality — specifically calling out Dick and Dom as an example of last-minute booking rather than planned celebrity appearances — Scott announces a competitive challenge: he’ll offer a £1,000 bonus to whichever team member books the best guest over the next two weeks. Chopper, Laura, and Mark Chapman will take turns finding A-list names, with listeners potentially voting on the best booking. The challenge becomes a running joke about payment rates and logistics, with various text messages arriving offering suggestions (WWE’s Billy Gun among them) and offers to help via contact details provided on air.
