14 November 2024: Frozen fingers, brutal roads and Pat chooses Cher

The toughest day

Day four took Paddy from Ecclefechan towards Strathaven.

He had crossed the 200-mile mark and entered Scotland, but the route brought the most difficult terrain of the week.

Paddy began in freezing conditions and said he could barely feel his fingers or toes.

His quadriceps were painfully tight, while the long rural stretches created a mentally draining combination of hills, cold and monotony.

More than £4 million

Scott reminded Paddy that the total had stood at around £1.2 million when they last spoke the previous afternoon.

By day four it had passed £4 million.

One live total reached £4,052,773.

Paddy announced the figure to supporters gathered around him and thanked listeners repeatedly.

The result gave him the emotional lift needed to continue through the final section of the day.

Scott remembers his treadmill challenge

Scott compared the physical and mental strain with his own 24-hour treadmill challenge two years earlier.

He rejected Paddy’s suggestion that the cycling effort made the treadmill insignificant, noting that both challenges had raised more than £1 million and pushed the participants beyond normal limits.

The Birthday Game: Pat

Pat played the Birthday Game during the challenge coverage.

Her final choice was Cher’s Believe, which spent seven weeks at number one in 1999.

Scott noted the song’s influence on modern vocal production and Cher’s instruction that a woman could be sad for one verse but not two.

Pat was delighted with the result, and two listeners in Atherstone reported that it had made them dance at work.

A royal correction

Scott realised he had given the King’s age incorrectly.

He apologised after stating that Charles was 75 when he had actually turned 76.

Handover

Scott handed over with Paddy facing one final day and the fundraising total still climbing.
