Glastonbury weekend
Scott looked back on another Glastonbury weekend, highlighting Coldplay’s huge crowd, Cyndi Lauper’s catalogue and Shania Twain’s legends-slot appearance.
He argued that BBC television, radio and iPlayer offered some of the best seats in the house, particularly for listeners who could not remain at Worthy Farm for the entire weekend.
Shania’s cheesy chips
Jo Whiley spoke to Shania immediately after her performance.
Asked how she planned to celebrate, Shania requested champagne, food, cheddar, French fries and white vinegar.
Scott translated the order into its proper British form: cheesy chips with vinegar.
He replayed That Don’t Impress Me Much in honour of the request and worried that Jo’s heavily strained post-Glastonbury voice sounded increasingly like Phil Mitchell.
Coldplay’s flashing wristbands
Listeners wondered why old Coldplay concert wristbands sometimes began flashing again at home.
The programme established that they were triggered by infrared signals, meaning television remote controls could unexpectedly reactivate them.
Scott rejected the more romantic theory that a wristband in Britain might light up because Coldplay were playing somewhere else in the world.
The Birthday Game: Rudy
Rudy from East Sussex played the first Birthday Game of July.
He worked on building sites and had once been caught singing loudly to Céline Dion when he believed he was alone.
Rudy wanted something from the 1990s or 2000s.
His first spin was 10cc’s I’m Not in Love. He respected it as a classic but rejected it.
The second was Jason Derulo’s Don’t Wanna Go Home. Rudy did not recognise it strongly enough and gambled again.
His compulsory final song was Kylie Minogue’s Spinning Around, number one in 2000.
He was delighted with the Kylie result.
The Music Police
Scott opened a new Wimbledon-themed case after Jane remembered a tennis song from childhood.
The fragment involved a match, a player struggling to return serve and a repeated “game, set and match” line.
Handover
OJ Borg was sitting in for Sara Cox as Scott handed over after the Glastonbury recap.
