15 March 2023: Calvin Harris cracks Turbo Tony’s rave earworm

Unexpected appearances in the news

Scott asked listeners about the times they had unexpectedly appeared in newspapers or on television.

The topic followed Swedish coverage of Rylan meeting Loreen at Melodifestivalen, where one paper described him as a “mystery man”.

John from Suffolk remembered receiving a large newspaper feature after refusing to give Princess Diana his Polo mints.

Leanne appeared in a paper after kissing actor Darren Jeffries, who played OB in Hollyoaks, during a holiday in Malia.

Mia was interviewed at Milan railway station about delays and became increasingly passionate, comparing passengers with cattle.

Other appearances involved teaching CPR on Richard and Judy, being named Britain’s greenest family on Anne Diamond’s programme and appearing on Homes Under the Hammer as an expert valuer.

Eurovision tickets for Comic Relief

Scott promoted a Comic Relief draw offering two tickets to the Eurovision grand final in Liverpool.

The prize included accommodation, a contribution towards travel and the option of meeting Scott and Rylan.

Scott said watching Eurovision at home was enjoyable, but being inside the host city during the event felt completely different.

The Birthday Game: Josh

Josh played from Memphis, Tennessee.

He had followed Scott from Radio 1 to Radio 2 and joked that listening to BBC radio made him sound sophisticated to his American friends.

Josh turned 54 and shared his birthday with Eva Longoria, Dee Snider, will.i.am and former US president Andrew Jackson.

He regularly hosted a trivia night in a bar, although he explained that Americans would not normally call it a pub quiz.

His first Birthday Game spin was Justin Timberlake’s Mirrors, number one in 2013.

Josh accepted it immediately because both he and Timberlake came from Memphis and shared the initials JT.

The unused alternatives would have been Fern Kinney’s Together We Are Beautiful and Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive.

Scott sent one of the show’s birthday balloons to Tennessee.

Calvin Harris

Calvin Harris joined Scott following the release of Miracle, his third collaboration with Ellie Goulding.

Calvin said he had called the three songs a trilogy because it sounded amusing rather than because he had imposed a formal limit on working with Ellie.

He had once believed artists should collaborate only once and then move on, but two successful Florence Welch records changed his mind.

Ellie’s voice made her irreplaceable on Miracle. Calvin said he could not imagine another singer delivering the same tone.

A return to 1990s trance

Scott described Miracle as recalling 1990s rave and trance records.

Calvin agreed that the nostalgia was central to the track.

He and Ellie filmed a performance inside St Bartholomew the Great church, although he joked that they should pretend the vocals had also been recorded there.

A behind-the-scenes clip showed Ellie drinking coffee while Calvin ate a banana.

They joked that the same break would once have involved tequila, reflecting how their lives had changed.

Calvin’s nomadic life

Calvin revealed that he no longer had a permanent home.

He had left Los Angeles the previous November and had been moving around Europe and staying in hotels.

He intended to return to the UK, prompting Scott to offer him space at his own home outside London.

The Dance Music Police

Scott promoted Calvin to Special Constable and played several unidentified dance records.

Calvin quickly recognised Shakedown’s At Night.

He also identified Alex Gaudino’s Destination Calabria from a listener’s melody and recognised BBE’s Seven Days and One Week.

The difficult case remained Turbo Tony’s early-1990s rave track.

Tony remembered lyrics resembling: “I know everything there is to know about you, your body.”

Calvin initially had no answer, but listeners later identified the track as DJ Lunacy’s I Know You.

Turbo Tony confirmed by voice note that it was correct and said he could finally add it to his vinyl collection.

Rod Stewart’s encouragement

Calvin also discussed a photograph of Rod Stewart that he kept near him while performing.

The picture showed Rod pointing towards the camera and worked as a form of encouragement during shows.

Calvin said it felt as though Rod was standing in the corner telling him to keep going.

Handover

OJ Borg was sitting in for Sara Cox.

Scott handed over after celebrating the closure of Turbo Tony’s long-running case.
