How often should jeans be washed?
Scott had heard a rumour about a famous television presenter who apparently never washed their jeans.
He refused to name the presenter but admitted the idea disgusted him.
Scott said he could understand wearing the same pair for several days, but believed seven days should be the absolute maximum before washing them.
Listeners immediately challenged him.
One person said a friend put jeans in the freezer instead of washing them, believing the cold created an antibacterial effect.
Scott was unconvinced and suggested freezing merely sent the germs to sleep until the jeans warmed up again.
He also played advice claiming jeans should be washed only every two months or when visibly dirty or extremely smelly.
The chief executive of a famous denim company said his year-old jeans had never seen a washing machine and were cleaned only by spot treatment.
A listener said Victoria Beckham supposedly did not wash hers either and had adopted the same policy.
Tom Cruise’s disguise
Scott discussed Tom Cruise’s attempt to travel unnoticed on public transport.
Cruise said he used a baseball cap and headphones as a disguise.
A teenage passenger still recognised him, forcing the actor to put a finger to his lips and hope she would keep quiet.
Scott regarded the outfit as an extremely weak disguise for one of the world’s most recognisable actors.
Pepper’s Ghost
Scott promoted an episode of Things You Didn’t Know About Pop about the visual trick used for Gorillaz concerts and ABBA Voyage.
The effect, known as Pepper’s Ghost, dated back to Victorian conjuring.
A real or recorded image was reflected onto a transparent screen at an angle, creating the appearance of a figure occupying the stage.
Madonna had also used the technique in live performances.
The Birthday Game: Lynne
Lynne from Shropshire was born on 29 February and therefore played across 28 February and 1 March.
She described herself as 47 in ordinary years but only 11 and three-quarters in official leap-year birthdays.
In 2024, she and her son would both technically turn 12.
Lynne had celebrated with a karaoke drag-bar visit and planned a family meal.
Her first spin was Sam Smith’s Money on My Mind, number one in 2014. Lynne liked it but rejected it.
The second was No Doubt’s Don’t Speak, number one in 1997. She called it another good song but gambled again.
Her compulsory final selection was Tight Fit’s The Lion Sleeps Tonight, number one in 1981.
Lynne was pleased because the song reminded her of a performance staged during her sister’s hen party.
Listeners celebrated the result, although one argued that No Doubt had been robbed.
