St David’s Day
Scott asked Welsh listeners whether people still wore leeks on St David’s Day.
He encouraged them to send photographic proof of leeks, daffodils, rugby shirts and other celebrations.
One listener had seen a patient at a doctor’s surgery wearing an enormous daffodil on his hat.
Jilly predicts the news
Jilly had warned the previous afternoon that daffodils and spring onions looked dangerously similar when placed beside one another in shops.
The following morning, the same warning appeared in the news after botanist James Wong urged supermarkets not to display them together.
Daffodils are poisonous if eaten and can cause severe stomach problems.
Scott described Jilly as “Mystic Jilly” for predicting a genuine news story.
The Birthday Game: Elaine
Elaine from Minehead turned 45 and had begun learning to weave fabric.
She had discovered weaving through an Instagram video, joined a course and then bought a loom for her conservatory.
Elaine shared her birthday with Paul Hollywood, Justin Bieber, Javier Bardem and Kesha.
Her first Birthday Game spin was Madonna’s Frozen, number one in 1998. Elaine liked it but chose to continue.
The second was a Jason Derulo song. She again decided to risk the final spin.
Her compulsory third song was Ben E. King’s Stand by Me, which returned to number one in 1987 after appearing in the film of the same name.
Elaine said she was happy with the romantic final result.
Owain Wyn Evans’ Welsh challenge
Owain Wyn Evans joined Scott on the national day of Wales.
Scott advised the new Early Breakfast presenter to split his sleep into two blocks so he would feel less as though he was missing the evening.
Owain then gave Scott Welsh phrases describing activities with famous Welsh people.
Scott had to identify what Owain was doing.
The phrases involved playing squash with Catherine Zeta-Jones, cooking carrots in a microwave with H from Steps and Lisa Scott-Lee, and riding around a roundabout on a bicycle with Bonnie Tyler.
Scott repeatedly guessed incorrectly but gradually began recognising individual words.
Owain had previously played drums with Bonnie Tyler at Cardiff Castle, while Scott recalled spending a week with her at Eurovision.
The challenge reinforced Scott’s claim that being engaged to a Welsh man made him an honorary Welshman, even if his language skills needed considerable work.
The BBC One balloon
Scott celebrated news that the old BBC One hot-air balloon would fly again.
The ident had been retired and preserved, but a Bristol balloon group planned to reinflate it.
Scott noted that Bristol already had a major balloon festival and welcomed the return of one of television’s most recognisable symbols.
Ed Sheeran announces Subtract
Ed Sheeran announced that his next album, Subtract, would be released on 5 May.
Scott promoted a podcast episode explaining how Sheeran’s early house gigs and a concert by Nizlopi had helped shape his career.
Handover
Scott handed over to Sara Cox after wishing listeners a happy St David’s Day.
