Jo Whiley’s blister
Jo Whiley spoke to Scott about the physical consequences of long endurance challenges.
She described the damage to her feet and the large blister she had developed during an earlier fundraising challenge, providing an uncomfortable preview of what Scott might face.
Scott was already thinking about footwear, socks, pacing and how often he would be allowed to stop. Jo’s account made it clear that the difficulty would not simply be tiredness: pressure, friction and repeatedly placing weight on the same parts of the feet could become the real problem.
The Birthday Game: Brett
Brett was a wrestling commentator and Jack Russell owner.
His dog had apparently given him a birthday card, although both he and Scott acknowledged that another human had probably helped.
His opening spin was Enya’s Orinoco Flow, number one in 1988. Brett correctly identified the year but rejected the song.
His second choice was Lisa Stansfield’s All Around the World. Brett revealed that he had once had Lisa in his car, but said the story was too long to explain and gambled again.
The final spin produced Leona Lewis’s Bleeding Love.
Brett had seen Leona in concert and was delighted. “This is the best one of the three,” he said, making him one of the few contestants whose decision to risk everything produced his favourite option.
Speedmates aftermath
Scott checked in with science technicians Emma and Sam after their Speedmates appearance.
Their prize had involved escaping the unpleasant washing-up in their school laboratory, where beakers, jars and test tubes had accumulated.
The follow-up showed that Speedmates would not end when the quiz finished: Scott intended to return to contestants and find out whether the promised reward or punishment had actually happened.

Scott handed over with another reminder that the Children in Need challenge was only days away.
