21 December 2021: Becky Hill declared New Year’s Eve overrated as Mother or Lover made its Christmas debut

MMA commentary delivered more accidental innuendo

Scott opened with fresh commentary involving MMA fighter Danny Mainus.

His surname continued producing lines which sounded very different when isolated from their sporting context.

The show also discovered a darts manager whose name created exactly the same problem.

Scott and Chris had spent years collecting this sort of language for Innuendo Bingo.

Even without the retired water-spitting feature, they still could not resist an accidental double meaning.

Who-Vent remembered a Mastermind disaster

Door 21 of the Who-Vent Calendar reopened an old television moment.

A contestant on *Mastermind* was asked to identify Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.

The answer given was nowhere close.

Scott and Chris loved the kind of clip where the wrong response is so confidently delivered that it becomes more memorable than the actual question.

Brother or Lover became Mother or Lover

For the Christmas special, the relationship game changed format.

Luke, a trainee welder from North Wales, introduced Hayley.

The team now had to decide:

was Hayley Luke’s mother or lover?

Scott repeatedly insisted the game was not as strange as the title made it sound.

The strange interpretations, he argued, were entirely in the listeners’ heads.

The questions began.

A wetsuit and spending habits blurred the answer

Hayley’s most embarrassing memory of Luke involved him running around the garden in boxer shorts during the Ice Bucket Challenge.

Luke said the last thing Hayley properly told him off for was spending more than £200 on a gaming racing setup.

Asked for the sexiest present she had bought him, Hayley answered:

a wetsuit.

They had also been out drinking together many times.

Every clue could fit either a long-term partner or a very close parent-and-adult-child relationship.

The team split.

Scott and Chris chose mother.

Amy and Elias chose lover.

Hayley was Luke’s mum

The reveal:

mother.

Scott and Chris celebrated.

Luke and Hayley had successfully got through one of the programme’s most awkward relationship-game variations without anybody saying anything which could not be taken back.

The pair were thanked for being brave enough to play.

Mother or Lover had officially worked.

Becky Hill wanted to rant about New Year’s Eve

Then Becky Hill returned.

The show had previously discovered that Becky is exceptionally good at ranting.

Rather than interviewing her in the normal way, Scott and Chris simply gave her the space to complain.

She initially considered ranting about family members being unable to cook Christmas dinner.

Then she chose something larger.

New Year’s Eve.

The pressure to have fun was the problem

Becky listed everything she hated about the night.

Getting dressed up.

Finding an outfit.

Wearing uncomfortable shoes.

Running into people from school and people you had slept with but did not want to see again.

Queuing down the road to get into a pub.

Waiting 30 or 45 minutes for drinks.

Trying to carry several drinks back through a packed crowd.

People spilling them over your sleeves.

And, inevitably, somebody farting in the crowded room.

Then midnight arrives and everybody is supposed to become a completely new person because the date has changed.

Becky did not buy it.

Her conclusion was gloriously simple:

she hated New Year’s Eve.

Merry Christmas.

Christmas Bangers offered Basshunter against S Club 7

The day’s Bangers gave caller Chase two extremely 2000s festive choices.

Basshunter’s Jingle Bells-style Christmas track.

Or S Club 7’s Never Had a Dream Come True, which Scott regarded as a Christmas song largely because of the music video and the time of year it tends to reappear.

Chase chose Basshunter.

Scott immediately regretted not getting to play S Club.
