13 July 2021: Chris revealed Scott doesn’t actually throw the Bangers dart

Chris destroyed a piece of Radio 1 magic

Bangers often begins with Scott apparently throwing a dart at a map to choose where in the country the caller will come from.

Chris made the mistake of explaining that Scott does not literally throw a dart and somehow instantly connect to a random person in the town it lands on.

The reaction was far stronger than expected.

Listeners genuinely believed it.

One caller said she had always pictured the dart landing, cameras zooming in and Radio 1 technology instantly finding somebody from that location.

Another listener swore on the life of a pet goose that the revelation had ruined the feature.

Scott tried to defend entertainment generally.

There is always a bit of smoke and mirrors.

Chris had simply lifted the curtain too far.

Charlotte applied for premium-listener status

The imaginary VIP section remained open for people with extraordinary stories.

Charlotte brought one from her photography degree.

She had been trying to photograph birds and nature at a frozen reserve near Leeds.

The lake was iced over.

The birds were not cooperating.

Then Charlotte approached a bird hide and found a very different kind of wildlife.

A man was exposed and a woman was hurriedly putting her clothes back on.

Charlotte had accidentally interrupted somebody else’s outdoor encounter while carrying a camera.

Scott thought the story alone might be enough for first class.

Then Charlotte casually revealed something better.

Her hands were famous in Greggs

Charlotte worked as a hand model for Greggs.

The hands people saw holding vegan steak bakes, sausage rolls or pulling apart cheese toasties in promotional pictures were hers.

Scott and Chris immediately stopped caring about the nature-reserve story.

This was much bigger.

Charlotte explained that food stylists prepared the perfect products.

She then appeared on set and held them in exactly the right way.

Sometimes she walked past Greggs shops with friends and pointed at the posters:

“Those are my hands.”

Premium-listener status was assured.

Blow Your Own Trumpet got a real trumpet

The weekly celebration included somebody connected with the Barmy Army who could literally blow a trumpet.

For once, Scott did not need to supply the sound effect.

The caller produced the fanfare personally.

Another listener celebrated completing a final NQT teaching assessment.

A dental appointment at 2:30 naturally generated the tooth-hurty joke.

Podcasts: Real or No Real closed the show

The quiz asked whether bizarre-sounding podcasts actually existed.

One was Everything Is Alive, where performers are interviewed as inanimate objects such as a can of cola or a pillow.

Scott assumed nobody would really make that.

It was real.

After Charlotte’s day, that did not even seem especially strange.
