Dan from Norfolk had received the vaccine
The programme began with a genuinely significant piece of good news.
Dan, a frontline NHS worker from Norfolk, called after receiving his coronavirus vaccination.
Scott immediately triggered a special vaccine fanfare and thanked him for the work he had been doing.
The show invited other listeners who had received the jab to get in touch so they could be celebrated too.
At a point in the pandemic when the vaccination programme was still new, every individual call felt like a small glimpse of life moving forward.
The smallest achievements still deserved a trumpet
Tuesday also meant Blow Your Own Trumpet.
Not everything needed to be as significant as vaccination.
Ryan had managed to book a dentist appointment for 2:30.
That mattered largely because the old “tooth-hurty” joke was now literally true.
Scott and Chris gave the appointment far more ceremony than any normal dental booking would receive.
That was the feature’s rule: if the caller was pleased with themselves, Radio 1 would behave as though the achievement were enormous.
Roisin and Alfie challenged the Vegan Whisperer
Chris’s supposed ability to identify vegans returned.
Roisin and Alfie joined without immediately revealing which of them fitted the dietary category Chris was trying to detect.
Chris entered the now-familiar “trance”, listened to the voices and tried to sense the answer.
Scott remained deeply sceptical of any suggestion that veganism changes how somebody sounds.
The more often Chris played the game, the more seriously he pretended to take the talent.
The title summed up the day’s tone
The vaccine story gave the show a genuine moment of optimism.
The dentist booking turned an ordinary bit of life admin into a celebration.
And the Vegan Whisperer provided exactly the sort of stupid argument Scott and Chris had used throughout lockdown to keep the programme light.
A little prick really had produced a great moment.
