11 February 2020: Niall Horan answered the same questions ten years later

Scott had booked Whitney Houston without Whitney Houston

Scott announced he had bought tickets for An Evening With Whitney, a hologram concert built around Whitney Houston.

He had never seen her live and was fascinated by the technology.

Chris understood the technical interest.

He still found the concept strange.

The hologram could not truly respond to the audience.

There was no spontaneous interaction.

Scott insisted a live band, dancers, backing singers and modern projection could make it feel like an event rather than simply watching old footage.

The disagreement ended exactly where it began.

Scott was going.

Chris remained unconvinced.

Niall Horan returned to his younger self

The main guest was Niall Horan.

Radio 1 had found an old interview from around the beginning of One Direction and decided to repeat the same questions roughly ten years later.

The comparison revealed both how much had changed and how recognisable Niall still was.

One old question asked what he looked for in a woman.

The younger answer focused on somebody fun with good banter.

The 2020 version still prioritised somebody funny, with kindness and attractive eyes added to the list.

Scott liked that the basic answer had survived a decade of global fame.

Old celebrity questions became time capsules

Other questions brought back the peculiar atmosphere around the earliest One Direction interviews.

Who did Niall fancy?

What did he expect from fame?

What kind of person was he?

The interest was no longer really whether the answers were objectively correct.

It was hearing a person who had barely begun one of the biggest pop careers of the decade compare himself with the version looking back ten years later.

The show also teased old relationship rumours, including whether Niall had ever “done bits” with somebody from that era.

Niall handled the replay with the good humour required for Radio 1 to keep digging.

Funny Business found Dickie

Then the programme called a company called Dickie’s Dribble.

The owner answered.

His name really was Dickie.

The product was a premium cider made in the New Forest National Park using Kingston Black apples.

Scott and Chris should have been making a normal customer enquiry.

Instead, they became completely charmed by Dickie himself.

Dickie’s laugh became the feature

Dickie sounded as though he was permanently on the edge of laughing.

Scott wanted to keep him talking simply because the voice and laugh made everybody in the studio happier.

Dickie explained that his cider could also be used in cooking and mentioned a local pub preparing mussels with it.

Then he began giving out his website address with the full old-fashioned “www”, which made Scott laugh even more.

Only after the call did the team discover it was also Dickie’s birthday.

They rang him again.

He answered while driving or arriving in a farm vehicle and seemed genuinely surprised by the attention.

His website was apparently receiving far more traffic after the Radio 1 call.

Scott and Chris had started the day wanting Niall Horan.

They unexpectedly found another new show character.

Chris acquired a Scooter date

Bangers also produced a listener called Simon who had a spare ticket to see Scooter on 24 May.

Chris had recently chosen “The Logical Song” and talked about wanting to see them.

Simon offered the ticket.

Chris said yes in principle.

The pair had never met.

They were now apparently going raving together.
