9 January 2020: Arielle Free discovered she was conceived in a steamy Glastonbury tent

Radio 1 found an unexplained Nokia

Scott and Chris began with a tiny piece of studio paranoia.

A phone rang somewhere beneath or around the desk.

When they investigated, they found an old Nokia which did not obviously belong to either presenter.

The device felt so out of place that the pair jokingly wondered whether they were being recorded.

A normal obsolete phone had become a *Line of Duty*-style mystery simply by ringing at the wrong moment.

The BBC Sound generator arrived

The show also adapted its Generator again.

This time listeners could discover which previous BBC Sound of… artist they supposedly resembled.

The feature used the same deliberately over-engineered presentation as the National Treasure version.

Scott and Chris acted as though the BBC had provided impossible profiling technology.

The actual joy came from hearing which artist the machine apparently chose.

The Who Game returned for 2020

The first Who Game of the year also arrived.

Listeners took turns naming something which had once been familiar but now felt far enough in the past for everybody else to shout:

“Who?”

Scott insisted there was technique involved.

The shout had to come from the abdomen rather than the throat.

The game was still less about rules than recognising the exact moment a piece of culture moved from “everybody knows that” to “remember that?”

Arielle Free volunteered for conception radio

The main event was much bigger.

Arielle Free became the first Radio 1 DJ to take part in Where Do You Think They Were?

Her mum Jackie joined.

The automatic transcript repeatedly calls Arielle “Wayne Rooney”, an obvious ASR substitution contradicted by the source description and the fact the show explicitly says this is the first Radio 1 DJ to participate.

Jackie took the story back to Glastonbury.

The weather had been terrible.

Mud.

Heavy rain.

Cold.

Exactly the sort of festival where people spent far more time inside tents than planned.

Three layers mostly stayed on

Jackie described returning to the tent wearing roughly three layers of clothing, along with socks and Dr Martens.

Because it was so cold, almost everything remained on.

Scott and Chris immediately focused on the practical question of how conception could happen with so many layers.

Arielle wanted them to move on.

Jackie did not.

The couple were in the ordinary camping area rather than backstage.

Other tents were nearby.

The rain hammered on the fabric.

The tent steamed up

Jackie said the activity created enough body heat to warm the wet tent.

That produced condensation.

The tent effectively steamed up from the inside.

Scott thought this was one of the strongest visual details the feature had ever produced.

Arielle now had to live with it.

The show had spent months persuading listeners to put their parents through the feature.

January proved Radio 1’s own presenters were no longer exempt.
