22 January 2020: Benjamin Capaldi cooked a sticky, fishy, peppery mess

The biscuit email was extraordinary

Listeners had begun forwarding the best company-wide messages they received at work.

One of Wednesday’s examples concerned a multipack of biscuits brought in for people attending a training course.

The intention was for the biscuits to last the whole week.

By Tuesday morning, the entire pack had disappeared.

The resulting email asked for the biscuits to be returned or, if already eaten, replaced.

Managers were told to make sure every team member received the message.

Scott and Chris could not believe the amount of corporate machinery activated by one missing packet of biscuits.

DJ hasslers kept shouting “oi mate”

The programme also returned to DJs who had reached the end of their patience with persistent requests.

The archetype became the clubber standing beside the decks saying:

“Oi mate. Oi mate. Oi mate.”

Scott and Chris heard more stories about people treating a DJ booth like a personal jukebox.

The message from the professionals was uncomplicated.

Ask once if appropriate.

Do not touch the equipment.

Do not pull cables.

Do not pour a drink anywhere near thousands of pounds’ worth of kit.

Ben became Benjamin Capaldi

Tuesday had revealed Chris’s love of hearing food described in unnecessary detail.

Listener Ben, a bricklayer from Derbyshire, volunteered.

Outside work he had been posting cooking videos to Snapchat.

His repertoire included salmon and spaghetti bolognese.

Friends enjoyed the videos enough to ask during the week what he planned to cook next.

Ben had created a mock chef identity inspired by Lewis Capaldi and called himself something close to Benjamin Capaldi.

The automatic transcript mangles several names in this section, but the Capaldi joke is explicit.

The sexy food voice came out

Scott added music.

Ben described the ingredients and process as though introducing the world’s most luxurious meal.

Chris immediately understood why the feature worked.

Texture.

Sauce.

Fish.

Pepper.

The more detail Ben added, the more ridiculous the atmosphere became.

The title’s sticky, fishy, peppery mess captured the result.

A normal weekday dinner had been transformed into accidental food erotica.

Bamboleo Wednesday returned

The weekly Bamboleo gap also gave listeners another chance to request archive clips.

One technical or production mistake elsewhere in the afternoon had already irritated Scott.

Bamboleo still arrived with the usual ceremonial importance.

Even in January, Wednesday’s gap remained one of the show’s most reliable traditions.
