11 December 2019: Gemma Collins played Superfan Steve

Listen to this episode

Christmas Confessions began escalating

Scott and Chris invited listeners to use altered voices and false names to admit things they wanted off their chest before the end of the year.

The anonymity produced much stronger stories than ordinary daytime calls.

One caller admitted having intense dreams and feelings about somebody at work.

Another described flirtatious messages which had moved beyond thoughts into something potentially more real.

The show repeatedly reminded listeners that the people involved were being disguised.

The point was release, not exposing private individuals.

Craig thought he had chosen the wrong twin

One of the strangest callers was Craig.

He had been dating one identical twin for around two years.

He did not meet her sister until roughly six months into the relationship.

When he finally did, Craig thought the sister was more physically his type.

He described it as though he had somehow chosen the wrong twin.

Scott and Chris stopped him.

Identical twins were not interchangeable options.

The other sister had her own personality and, crucially, might not fancy Craig at all.

Craig appeared genuinely surprised by how strongly the presenters rejected his logic.

Gemma Collins arrived

Then Gemma Collins joined for one of the year’s most anticipated Superfan Steve appearances.

A listener called before the feature simply to make sure they knew exactly when Gemma would be on.

Scott promised it was worth hearing.

Gemma was told Radio 1 had found her biggest fan.

His name was Steve.

Chris was actually sitting two doors away with all the answers.

Gemma wanted Steve to win

The game immediately became perfect for her.

Before the quiz properly settled, Gemma began treating Steve as a sweet, nervous admirer.

She told him not to be nervous and compared his excitement with how she might feel speaking to Madonna or Mariah Carey.

Then she decided she might let Steve win because it was Christmas.

Scott could barely contain himself.

Steve did not need charity.

He had the answers written down.

Crimewatch confused everybody

Questions covered Gemma’s podcast, TOWIE, her old job and famous quotes.

At one point Steve incorrectly listed Crimewatch among reality programmes Gemma had appeared on.

Gemma stopped the game to ask what exactly she had supposedly done on Crimewatch.

The error made the fake fan even more believable because Chris did not appear superhumanly perfect.

Toilet habits became quiz material

Another question asked what Gemma did every night at around 11pm while on the toilet.

The correct answer was related to watching particular videos.

Steve’s delivery and Gemma’s commentary became increasingly chaotic.

The feature was almost eating itself.

Gemma believed she was humouring a real superfan.

Chris was trying not to laugh in another room.

Scott was watching both layers happen at once.

The reveal landed perfectly

When Gemma finally learned Steve was Chris, the trick had worked completely.

She had bought into the nervous-fan character from the beginning.

Scott and Chris immediately ranked it among the strongest versions of the year.

Cheryl had cried laughing.

Rylan had fallen for it despite knowing the concept.

Now the GC had spent half the quiz trying to help Steve win.

Bamboleo had one of its best gaps

Wednesday also brought Bamboleo.

Scott described the archive gap as one of the strongest they had done.

December now had the Whoovent Calendar, the Who Game and Bamboleo all mining old clips at once.

Radio 1’s past was doing a remarkable amount of work in the run-up to Christmas.
