LOLathon special: the rude section kept escalating
LOLathon special edition
Another of the 8 March podcast files captured the LOLathon at its most chaotic.
The studio had already been awake and broadcasting for hours.
Now a succession of guests arrived with the explicit understanding that the material could be ruder than the ordinary afternoon show.
Jack Whitehall, John Newman and Nick Grimshaw were among the people passing through.
The jokes were not necessarily good.
That was almost irrelevant.
John Newman offered the classic Velcro line that buying it was “a rip-off”.
Jack tried material which barely survived the setup.
By this stage, simply watching famous people commit to terrible jokes was part of the fundraiser.
Megan Barton Hanson entered Innuendo Bingo
Former *Love Island* contestant Megan Barton Hanson then played a special late-night Innuendo Bingo.
The ordinary revived version already relied on clips which sounded rude when removed from context.
The LOLathon edition was deliberately pushed further.
Winterwatch, American television and other broadcasts supplied accidental phrases which would have been difficult enough for Chris and Megan to survive while well rested.
In the middle of the night, with everybody exhausted, almost every clip became dangerous.
Water went everywhere.
Scott regarded the mess as evidence that the booking had worked.
Andy King arrived from Fyre Festival
The show also spoke to Andy King, one of the breakout figures from Netflix’s *Fyre* documentary.
His story about being prepared to “take one for the team” to secure bottled water for the doomed festival had become one of the documentary’s most viral moments.
Scott and Chris wanted to know whether that commitment extended beyond Fyre.
They gave Andy a series of increasingly ridiculous hypothetical situations.
If a pop star needed something embarrassing done to save a festival, would he take one for the team?
Andy kept saying yes.
The original documentary story had become his unlikely personal catchphrase.
The fundraising total was already substantial
At one point in this section, donations had passed roughly £22,000.
Scott and Chris kept reminding listeners that the jokes and celebrity chaos were only the mechanism.
The purpose was Comic Relief.
Every time another total arrived, the exhaustion became easier to justify.
The final number was still many hours away.
