They were still recovering from the LOLathon
Monday was the first ordinary show after the 24-hour fundraiser.
Scott and Chris did not sound as though life had returned completely to normal.
They were still processing the fact listeners had helped push the total beyond £250,000.
Scott described the LOLathon as one of the best experiences of his life.
After eventually sleeping, the pair had celebrated again on Friday night.
Scott ended up out near Chris’s area wearing Dale Winton-style sunglasses and a Comic Relief red nose.
The post-marathon restraint had not lasted very long.
Mary’s cockerel still needed a name
Before the LOLathon interrupted normal programming, listener Mary had offered Radio 1 a large unnamed cockerel.
The show wanted to name it after somebody who had behaved badly enough to deserve being called a cock.
The nominations resumed.
Listeners supplied cheating exes, selfish partners and friends whose stories made Scott and Chris immediately understand the nomination.
The exercise had already produced a snake called Will in February.
Now the programme wanted an equally satisfying cockerel result.
Ask Me Anything found The Provider
The day’s Ask Me Anything guest was Josh Weller, whose air-guitar persona was The Provider.
Josh explained that he had entered an air-guitar competition almost by accident.
He had never really played air guitar competitively before.
The event took place in a pub, where performers were judged on how convincingly they could act as though an invisible instrument were real.
Josh progressed through the competition.
The transcript places him around 28th in the UK.
Scott and Chris immediately treated this like a genuine sporting ranking.
Stage names became the real fascination
“The Provider” then sent the show into a discussion about people who placed “The” in the middle of their names.
Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino was the obvious celebrity example.
Listeners contributed nicknames from workplaces, pubs and sports teams.
A title which sounded ridiculous to outsiders could become completely normal inside one friendship group.
Josh had entered as an ordinary comic.
He left the feature as a nationally ranked air guitarist with a title.
That was exactly the kind of transformation Ask Me Anything existed to find.
