Friday Extra Show: Scott was still away

Extra podcast edition

Scott remained on holiday, so there had been no normal Scott-and-Chris daily podcast for several days.

Chris decided the Friday Extra Show should appear anyway.

He had spent the week presenting with Matt Edmondson.

The following week would pair him with Alice Levine.

Chris joked about Alice using his long-running nickname for her, Barbara Windsor, and admitted he was already trying to invent things they could do together.

The Friday podcast became the one surviving piece of the usual show format while Scott was away.

Tom Walker and Rudimental celebrated being alive

Chris replayed one of his favourite moments from the week with Matt.

Tom Walker and Rudimental joined a feature inspired by the phrase “What a Time to Be Alive.”

Listeners supplied tiny modern conveniences which made life surprisingly good.

Tom and Rudimental turned them into an improvised song.

The suggestions included Google Translate, having a freshly washed bottom, a six-slice toaster, an all-day breakfast in a can, vegan chicken burgers, a cheese advent calendar, the Wetherspoons app and paying with Face ID.

The lyrics were deliberately ordinary.

The musical treatment made every convenience sound like a profound triumph of civilisation.

Chris thought the finished performance deserved a much bigger life beyond one weekday show.

Maria had survived the family group chat

The podcast caught up again with Maria after the Australian boat edition of Where Do You Think They Were?

She had shared the programme with family back home.

Her cousins responded with the kind of messages expected after hearing an aunt explain a stormy yacht conception in detail.

Maria still thought taking part had been worth it.

Being thousands of miles from her parents probably helped.

Nanny Joyce went into a rap battle

Chris and Matt had also revived one of their occasional nan rap battles.

Chris’s Nanny Joyce went up against Matt’s Granny Evanson.

The women were given actual rap lyrics and encouraged to perform them seriously.

Nanny Joyce needed coaching simply to say “brap.”

Granny Evanson had to learn that “sick bars” were not bars of gold or chocolate.

The resulting performances were funny precisely because both women committed to language which sounded completely unlike anything they would normally say.

Chris loved the feature enough to replay the parts which had taken longest to teach.

Chabuddy G read The Three Little Pigs

A second Chabuddy G idea had failed to make the weekday show properly.

Chris had put him in a studio and asked him to perform a CBeebies-style bedtime story.

The chosen book was The Three Little Pigs.

Chabuddy delivered the story in his own style, occasionally stopping to comment on the logic and the unexpectedly dark ending.

By the end, the wolf had effectively been boiled alive.

Chris questioned whether this was actually reassuring material to send children to sleep with.

He still thought Chabuddy should record an entire bedtime series.

Then Chabuddy accidentally met Ellie Goulding

The strangest moment of the week happened because Chabuddy arrived too early.

Ellie Goulding was already in the studio for an interview.

Rather than leave Chabuddy outside, the programme simply let him join in.

Ellie and Chabuddy had never properly met.

He told her he had been watching and “studying” her online, before quickly clarifying that he did not mean it in a creepy way.

He promoted the idea of sliding into your own DMs to send yourself compliments.

Then the conversation turned to Live Lounge nerves.

Ellie admitted she could become very nervous before major performances.

Chabuddy developed his own inspirational theory:

a little “bum flutter” was useful before doing something big.

Scott’s holiday had left Chris working with different presenters for two weeks.

Somehow that resulted in Ellie Goulding receiving motivational advice from Chabuddy G about the importance of bum flutters.

Listener questions finished the month

Chris also answered the Friday listeners’ usual behind-the-scenes questions.

One person asked whether Radio 1 DJs became tired of constantly saying their own names and the station name.

Chris admitted presenters did say their names far more than normal people ever would.

He particularly noticed how often Mistajam’s name appeared because it was regularly spelled out in full.

Another listener asked whether Example was as nice in person as he appeared online.

Chris said yes.

He remembered being in Ibiza when Example came over with champagne to congratulate him around his wedding and then spent much of the evening with him, even introducing Chris to MK.

November therefore ended on the exact kind of material the Friday Extra Show had gradually specialised in: lost audio, radio gossip, old friends, strange guests and answers that would never have fitted into the ordinary weekday programme.
