A weekend of concerts
Scott returned after a weekend containing major shows from Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys and Elton John.
Taylor Swift had accidentally swallowed an insect on stage in Chicago.
Beyoncé’s final London show attracted celebrity guests including Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Leonardo DiCaprio, Paul McCartney and Naomi Campbell.
Scott also noted an unexpected Girls Aloud reunion when Kimberley Walsh and Nicola Roberts joined Olly Alexander during Mighty Hoopla.
Secret listening at work
Jeremy Vine’s discussion about headphones prompted listeners to admit they listened to Radio 2 secretly in quiet offices.
Many used the one-ear technique: one earbud playing the programme while the other ear remained free for colleagues and managers.
The Birthday Game: David
David from Alton turned 37 and spent part of the day dealing with a failed MOT and expensive repairs involving the bonnet and exhaust.
He had recently completed the 68-mile Isle of Wight coastal path.
David also presented a retro chart feature for Radio Frimley Park hospital radio, where he had volunteered for around 11 years.
He wanted music from the mid-to-late 1990s or early 2000s.
His first spin was Rod Stewart’s I Don’t Want to Talk About It. David rejected it as too slow.
The second was Cilla Black’s You’re My World. He said a friend at hospital radio would have loved it, but he did not.
His compulsory final song was Jason Derulo’s Want to Want Me, number one in 2015.
David called it fantastic and introduced the record himself in radio-presenter style.
The Music Police
Scott reopened the Music Police after Vernon Kay supplied an emergency case the previous Friday.
Vernon’s melody had been identified as The Wannadies’ You and Me Song.
The new case came from Johnny in Essex.
Johnny remembered a line sounding roughly like: “You’re making me go, you’re making me stay.”
Scott admitted there was very little evidence and replayed the clip using the smart-speaker rewind feature.
Listeners began suggesting possibilities, but neither Scott nor producer Ellie could identify it.
Adam Lambert was due to join the force later in the week and would be asked to examine the case.
Other stories
Scott warned listeners in Cumbria about Echo, a four-foot tegu lizard that had escaped after digging out of her enclosure while her owner took a meerkat to the vet.
He also looked ahead to Louise taking the Same Interview challenge the following afternoon.
Handover
