1 November 2018: Anne-Marie met Superfan Steve on the London Eye

Radio 1 broadcast from the London Eye

Scott and Chris left Broadcasting House for one of the stranger outside broadcasts of the year.

The show came from a pod on the London Eye to mark the launch of the BBC Sounds app.

Scott was not especially comfortable with the height.

Every small wobble or movement of the pod produced a nervous reaction which Chris immediately began enjoying.

Scott tried closing his eyes and decided that made things worse.

The programme had to keep moving around the wheel while they broadcast, which meant the presenters repeatedly passed the highest point and then descended again.

Scott joked that he was doing it all for BBC Sounds and took comfort from listeners messaging to say they had already downloaded the app.

The whole outside broadcast felt more like a school trip than an ordinary Radio 1 afternoon.

Anne-Marie met Radio 1’s newest superfan

The programme also launched a new celebrity game: Superstar versus Superfan.

Anne-Marie was told Chris was away on holiday.

That was deliberate.

She was then introduced to a supposed mega-fan called Steve, who had apparently been selected because he knew almost everything about her.

Steve was really Chris, sitting elsewhere with the answers in front of him.

Anne-Marie had no idea.

The questions covered her childhood, music, karate and personal favourites.

Steve became increasingly unsettling because he appeared to know details any normal fan would struggle to answer so quickly.

Anne-Marie began wondering how he knew so much.

The reveal finally came when she was told Superfan Steve was actually Chris from the show.

Anne-Marie fell into genuine laughter.

Scott and Chris immediately knew the character had potential beyond one guest.

Superfan Steve had arrived.

Oliver found out exactly where he came from

Where Do You Think They Were? returned with listener Oliver, who had just turned 25.

His mum Sharon agreed to explain the story.

It was the couple’s first Valentine’s Day as a married pair.

They went out for a romantic meal at a local pub.

There was steak.

There was a chocolate mousse, which Scott immediately declared one of the sexiest desserts available.

Then came a taxi home.

Sharon admitted there had already been some canoodling in the car.

The couple hurried into the house, made their way upstairs and ended up in the back bedroom.

The room contained an unmistakably 1990s pine bed with a pink bedspread.

Sharon also admitted there may have been some activity on the stairs before they reached it.

Oliver had never discussed any of this with his mother before.

He now knew that a Valentine’s meal involving steak and chocolate mousse had probably led directly to him.

The birthday message compensated for the pine bed

Once Oliver had survived the story, Radio 1 delivered the reward.

His birthday montage included messages from people including Scarlett Moffatt and Hayley Williams.

Oliver said the shout-out had actually made the ordeal worthwhile.

Scott was delighted.

The game had once again succeeded in persuading somebody to exchange permanent family knowledge for a very good birthday message.
