A 98-year-old finally joined a nativity
Scott and Chris heard about a 98-year-old woman in a care home taking part in her first ever nativity play.
She had been cast as the donkey.
The story immediately prompted Chris to attempt a donkey noise, which Scott thought sounded less like a farmyard animal and more like the opening of Dizzee Rascal’s “Bonkers”.
It was one of the more unusual late entries into a Christmas tradition normally associated with primary schools.
Wrap Myself in Paper returned
The show also revived one of its established Christmas favourites, Magnus Carlsson’s “Wrap Myself in Paper”.
Listener Danielle had pointed out that the normal calendar date for playing it would fall on a Sunday, when Scott and Chris would not be on air, so the annual appearance had to be moved.
For newer listeners it was another baffling piece of Scott Mills Christmas history; for regulars, the song’s return meant December had properly begun.
Chris had crossed the Mum boundary
Chris then admitted to a small relationship milestone he had not intended to reach.
While spending time around his girlfriend’s family, he had accidentally called her mother “Mum”.
The word came out naturally before Chris had time to consider what it implied. Afterwards he worried that he had somehow promoted the relationship to a more serious family level without discussing it with anybody.
Listeners debated when, if ever, it became normal to call a partner’s parents Mum or Dad.
One listener remembered signing a card “from [boyfriend] and me”, only for the boyfriend’s mother to interpret the wording as her being called Mum. She then began signing messages that way herself.
Chris was relieved to discover he was not the only person to stumble into the new title by accident.
PrettyMuch also visited after appearing on The X Factor, but the day’s most complicated relationship question remained what to call somebody else’s mother.
