17 October 2017: Ailment or Ale House tested pubs against medical conditions

Scott was preparing to host the radio industry’s awards

Scott was writing scripts for the Audio and Radio Industry Awards in Leeds and feeling the pressure.

Almost everybody he currently worked with — along with plenty of people from earlier stages of his radio career — would be in the room.

Chris had supplied several jokes, only for the organisers to reject them.

Scott therefore reached the sensible conclusion that, because he was not a stand-up comedian, adding more jokes simply created more opportunities for something to go wrong.

Pub or medical condition?

The show noticed that the names of some traditional pubs sounded strangely similar to diseases and medical complaints.

That became Ailment or Ale House.

Scott and Chris read out names and challenged people to work out whether each belonged to an actual health condition or a drinking establishment.

The deliberately flimsy premise became exactly the sort of one-off game the programme could stretch much further than expected.

Chris raided Radio 1 for his CBBC prize

Chris still had nothing suitable to take to Saturday Mash-Up!.

The search moved around the Radio 1 office, where possible prizes included James Arthur’s book, old promotional discs and photographs from Radio 1 events.

Scott insisted Chris needed something that actually felt connected to Radio 1 rather than simply handing a child whatever abandoned object happened to be nearest the desk.
