The show arrives in Hull
Scott and Chris moved the programme to the Albemarle Music Centre for Radio 1’s Academy, the week of free creative-industry events leading into Big Weekend. Their usual 1–4pm show went out live from Hull, putting the city at the centre of Radio 1 for the afternoon.
The Academy was aimed particularly at 16-to-19-year-olds interested in creative careers. Alongside the broadcasts, visitors could attend talks, workshops and practical sessions covering music, television, radio, digital media and other parts of the industry.
Caspar Lee talks social media
YouTube star Caspar Lee dropped in to speak to Scott about building an audience online and how young people could make an impact on social media. It fitted neatly with the Academy’s emphasis on turning interests in digital culture and entertainment into practical career ideas.
The week was deliberately built around access to people already working in those industries, with attendees able to hear directly from presenters, performers, producers and online creators rather than simply watch them from a distance.
Big Weekend week gets under way
You Me At Six were also at the Academy on Monday, performing for attendees before leading a performance workshop and jam session about songwriting and playing live.
Scott’s own production team had been involved from the previous day, running an Innuendo Bingo workshop where attendees could learn how material for the feature was developed. By Monday afternoon the programme itself had arrived, beginning a week in which Hull would move from Academy workshops to Radio 1’s Big Weekend at Burton Constable Hall.
23–26 May
Radio 1’s Academy continued in Hull through Thursday 25 May, with other Radio 1 presenters broadcasting from the Albemarle Music Centre. The Manchester Arena attack took place on the evening of Monday 22 May, after Scott and Chris’s Academy programme, and Radio 1’s output in the following days was necessarily affected by the news.
27–29 May
Radio 1’s Big Weekend took place at Burton Constable Hall on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 May. Scott was among the Radio 1 presenters on site introducing acts during the festival. One surviving local report also records Scott appearing with Zara Larsson in a festival phone-box feature before two listeners were invited backstage to meet them.
These were Big Weekend broadcasts rather than ordinary weekday editions of the Scott Mills Daily. Monday 29 May was the Spring Bank Holiday.
