Mark Wright leads Radio 1’s Essex lion watch
Bank Holiday show introducer Billy revealed that he had wet himself in front of the Queen while singing with his primary-school choir at the Royal Albert Hall. The intense heat had already made him ill, and the children were not allowed to leave their positions once the performance began. Now living in Essex, he was staying indoors because of reports that a lion was loose, although he thought the distant photograph might show a dog or somebody with heavily backcombed hair.
Scott launched “Lion Watch” and called Mark Wright as the programme’s man on the ground. Mark cautiously looked behind a gym ball, searched a park and mistook an older woman’s orange hair for the animal before reporting that fellow TOWIE star Arg had also disappeared. Scott suggested checking the meat aisle and the high street, but eventually decided not to occupy any more of Mark’s Bank Holiday after police called off the search without finding a lion.
Beccy returned from Reading Festival with a failing voice and the story of unexpectedly introducing Coheed and Cambria on the main stage. After Fred from Spector suggested a call-and-response entrance, she walked out to “boom, boom, boom, let me hear you say” without considering how awkwardly the band’s name would fit. Huw Stephens had also introduced her as a celebrity, increasing the pressure, but messages from people who witnessed the moment assured her that the crowd had reacted well.
Chris reviewed his first conventional festival after arriving at Reading with a hangover and none of the accessories worn by more experienced visitors. He discovered ostrich burgers, a remarkably small £10 pizza and a shop that helped him look more festival-ready, then watched an unidentified group on the BBC Introducing Stage, The Black Keys and Foo Fighters. His crowd-surfing attempt failed when the people in front could not lift him properly, but he tried a mosh pit, inspected the unusual urinals and awarded Reading five stocks before deciding to keep his wristband on indefinitely.
The youth hostel where Chris had stayed during Breakfast cover contacted the show about his supposedly outstanding chores and invited him back to clean its basement sauna. Beccy also revisited The Hotel Inspector after listeners found more uses of Margaret “Muff” Ashworth’s nickname, taking the corrected total to 71. Oh, What’s Occurring? then counted 58 seconds of appreciative noises from Arlene Phillips as she tasted a chocolate truffle cake, substantially longer than any of the team’s predictions.
