Nicole Scherzinger and Dappy join Chris’s youth-hostel morning
Chris solved the problem of another early Breakfast Show start by paying £20 to stay in the youth hostel next door to Radio 1. After drinks with colleagues, he checked into a four-person room, slept in the bottom bunk and woke three strangers with his alarm before walking into work in under a minute. Scott immediately treated it as the beginning of a new lifestyle, although questions about shared rooms, missing clothes and the chores supposedly required from guests made the night sound less glamorous than Chris initially claimed.
Nicole Scherzinger called from a Los Angeles recording studio while working through the night on her album. She described SoulCycle as a candlelit mixture of spinning, inspiration and therapy, then explained that she had originally been asked to guest judge for a single X Factor audition before being offered a permanent place. Nicole enjoyed the stronger characters she found on the British show, promised good talent across every category and refused to let Scott trick her into revealing which group looked best before judges’ houses.
Dappy arrived after his own overnight studio session and looked back at appearing in the first Fun and Filth Cabaret a year earlier. He received a recorded complaint from Fazer for failing to promote “Killer”, watched Edinburgh favourite Barry Morgan demonstrate his one-finger organ method and considered using Chris’s youth hostel for future early interviews. Dappy then introduced “Good Intentions”, describing its lyrics as an interview in themselves and part of his effort to establish several different musical styles on his solo album.
Scott’s latest attempt to prepare Nick Grimshaw for breakfast involved arranging a supposedly serious magazine interview. A member of the team asked Grimmy questions intended for Scott, Danny Howard and other Radio 1 presenters, including whether he was too old for the station, still enjoyed wine, had grown up in Southampton and would bring back Flirt Divert. Grimmy patiently corrected the mistakes until the final requests involving the lottery made the deception impossible to sustain. Huw Stephens then previewed Radio 1’s Reading Festival coverage with You Me at Six, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Maccabees, Foster the People and a secret Introducing Stage performance.
The team corrected its earlier count from The Hotel Inspector, finding 62 uses of owner Margaret “Muff” Ashworth’s nickname in a single episode. Danny Howard joined Chris for the final Innuendo Bingo of Scott’s Breakfast week, where clips about trout tickling, red and purple cycling helmets, parliamentary hat-doffing and somebody getting too close to a Caribbean police officer eventually broke his resistance. Danny still had a show to present afterwards, while Chris’s unbrushed teeth and grey clothing had added their own risks to the game.
