One Direction launch Radio 1’s Teen Awards line-up
Scott began a week covering the Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Chris and producer Matt Fincham. He reported spending the previous day at V Festival, where he had queued for an hour and a half at a cash machine before seeing Tom Jones, Cher Lloyd, Olly Murs and The Killers. Chris initially misheard the morning’s main announcement as the “Tina Awards” and arrived armed with facts about Tina Turner, Tina Fey and other famous Tinas before discovering that the programme meant Radio 1’s Teen Awards.
Nick Grimshaw joined the studio as host of the event and introduced the first confirmed act, One Direction. The group returned to the same studio almost exactly a year after Scott had given “What Makes You Beautiful” its first play anywhere in the world, and confirmed that they would headline at Wembley Arena on 7 October. Louis relaxed on the sofa with breakfast while the others discussed their previous Teen Awards appearance and joked that they planned to remain around Radio 1 all day with water pistols.
The programme also opened nominations for three Teen Heroes aged between 12 and 17. Scott and One Direction encouraged listeners to put forward young carers, fundraisers and people who had acted courageously or made a difference to their communities. The winners would attend the ceremony and receive recognition alongside the music, sport and entertainment stars, with nominations remaining open until 3 September.
Taylor Swift announced her return to the awards in a recorded message and introduced “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”. Conor Maynard arrived to confirm his performance, discuss his Ne-Yo collaboration “Turn Around” and help promote the Teen Hero search. Little Mix completed the morning’s initial line-up by phone, with each member saying her name before answering so that Scott could tell who was speaking, less than a year after the group’s X Factor victory.
Away from the announcements, Chris explained how his friend Sédosa’s new girlfriend had transformed him from a determined nonconformist into somebody wearing a shirt and tie to The Lion King. Scott revisited Edinburgh favourites Paloma Faith, Stooshe and Barry Morgan, introduced David Guetta and Sia’s “She Wolf” as his new big thing, and wondered whether footage of him trying to appear behind Mischa Barton might place him in its video. Oh, What’s Occurring? ended the show by counting 21 uses of “lush” in one episode of Don’t Tell the Bride.
