One Direction celebrate a year since their Radio 1 debut
Show introducer Abbas had enjoyed one of the Olympics’ more unusual jobs as an official beach-volleyball sand raker. He was selected without any specialist qualifications and spent eight days smoothing the court, but did not make the team for the finals because his sand contained too many lumps. Other rakers reminded him they were shaving the surface rather than digging potatoes, and even the promise of good coffee failed to impress the Canadian players. Abbas returned to his normal work as an accountant but considered applying for Rio 2016.
Chris made a discovery of his own after Scott explained the concept of a laundrette service wash. With his mother away, an entire week’s clothing had accumulated before the forthcoming trips to Zante and Edinburgh, and he was astonished that somebody would wash and fold everything within three hours. The fact that boxer shorts could go into the same bag amazed him most of all. Chris repeatedly inspected the neatly folded results and declared that the service was the future.
The Posh Radio 4 Lady read messages from listeners who had temporarily abandoned the programme for the Olympics, proposed a live performance of “Mile High Club” at the Edinburgh cabaret and requested the return of Barrioke. The team replayed highlights of the feature, in which men named Barry had sung songs by artists including Carly Rae Jepsen, Gnarls Barkley and Jessie J. Scott and Chris were delighted by how well it held up, although the listener requesting its return had been only seven when she first heard it.
One Direction fans reminded Scott that it was exactly a year since he had introduced “What Makes You Beautiful” for its first play anywhere in the world. The anniversary had not appeared in his diary, but he recognised why listeners treated the moment like New Year’s Eve and considered celebrating with brightly coloured chinos. Rita Ora had unknowingly marked the date too by covering the song in the Live Lounge, giving Scott a suitable record to play as the programme looked back at the group’s extraordinary first year.
Usain Bolt’s declaration that he was now a living legend inspired Chris to make the same announcement to his mother. He asked her to sit down, promised that she would still see him as the same son and solemnly came out as a living legend, only for her to keep waiting for the real news and then tell him to return to work. Beccy later revealed that one cabaret act would require safety goggles for the front row, while Oh, What’s Occurring? counted the number of times Colin Jackson had said “indeed” during the Olympic athletics coverage. The answer was 20.
