9 July 2024: Michael Ball joins the DJ stage and Sandy lands on Cascada

Where is Michael Ball?

Nick from Halifax called to complain that Michael Ball was missing from the Radio 2 in the Park DJ stage.

He argued that Scott had failed to deliver on the campaign for a set packed with musical-theatre bangers.

Scott initially denied making a firm promise, but hinted that the final details were already being worked out.

Later, he confirmed that Michael Ball’s Broadway Bangers would open Sunday’s DJ stage in Preston.

The set would feature famous songs from musicals reworked for a festival crowd.

The Birthday Game: Sandy

Sandy from Worcestershire turned 64 and worked for an insurance company that banned the radio in its office.

Scott instructed her to tell management that his show had once been described as one of the least distracting in the world.

Sandy’s nickname was Nobby because her maiden surname was Clark.

She wanted Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Spandau Ballet or another strong 1980s record.

Her first spin was Jason Derulo’s Savage Love. She rejected it as not party-like enough.

The second was the Fugees’ Killing Me Softly, the best-selling single of 1996. Sandy liked it but gambled again.

Her compulsory final song was Cascada’s Evacuate the Dancefloor, number one in 2009.

Although none of the options came from the 1980s, Sandy considered Cascada the best of the three and accepted it enthusiastically.

Kylie’s mysterious symbols

Listeners tried to decode a cryptic Kylie Minogue social-media post involving three symbols.

The team suspected the answer would become clear when Kylie joined Zoe Ball later in the week.

Handover

Scott handed over after confirming that Michael Ball’s Broadway Bangers campaign had succeeded.
