Grimmy and Beccy fill Call or Delete with owls
Nick Grimshaw began his week covering Scott’s lunchtime show with Beccy, while listener Tara described the toilet phobia she had developed after being locked in one for an hour. She now took her phone into unfamiliar toilets and assessed possible escape routes, while Grimmy admitted he needed a friend to guard any festival cubicle he used in case somebody pushed it over.
Beccy played Call or Delete for the first time and immediately left Radio 1 studio manager Derek Knight a message claiming that an agitated owl was attacking her. Grimmy then called his music-video director friend Tabitha and offered her an urgent job making an artistic, East London-style video for Jedward. The increasingly unlikely concept involved the twins turning into their pet owls after leaving a party, yet Tabitha remained remarkably willing to consider it.
The final call landed on Huw Stephens’s producer, Tasha. Beccy told her that two hungry tawny owls had arrived downstairs for Huw and asked whether she should bring them up. Tasha believed the story, suggested that the birds could deal with the building’s mice and went to reception to meet them, only to discover that no owls existed.
Grimmy discussed the enormous cold sore he had developed after Hackney Weekend and the unwise “home surgery” he had attempted with aftershave before presenting T4 on the Beach. Friends and production staff had politely insisted that it was barely visible, but Jordan from Rizzle Kicks immediately asked whether Grimmy had been punched. Annie Mac tried the same supposed remedy with perfume after hearing the story.
Greg James called from Glasgow at the beginning of his week staying in listeners’ homes before T in the Park. He admitted feeling apprehensive about sleeping in strangers’ houses, named his travelling teddy bear Ryan Bear and discussed everything from spare beds to unfamiliar toilet etiquette. Alan Dedicoat later voiced an Oh, What’s Occurring? quiz about celebrity autobiographies, including Dawn French’s Dear Fatty and Jo Brand’s Look Back in Hunger.
