Grimmy runs to work and plans a rival garden party
Grimmy started the programme in shorts, a gym top and no suitable clothes for broadcasting. He had gone for a run in the sunshine, kept going until he reached Radio 1, and then decided that changing was less practical than simply presenting in the kit.
The show heard from Jenny, who was preparing to carry the Olympic torch. Grimmy and Chris were impressed by the prospect, while still worrying about such essential details as the correct arm angle, the uniform and whether a torchbearer should really be texting while running.
Feeling excluded from Radio 1’s Torbay event, Grimmy decided he and Chris should stage their own alternative in his garden. The plan involved a barbecue, a sound clash and the sort of last-minute pop-star booking that only becomes plausible after it has been discussed on air.
The day also developed Grimmy’s campaign against Matt Fincham, who was apparently ignoring messages after being successfully annoyed the previous day. Grimmy considered the read receipts a personal affront and made the producer’s silence into another reason for the team to escalate the joke.
It was an enjoyably loose cover-show edition, powered by hot weather, running gear and the idea that a handful of Radio 1 people in a garden could somehow compete with a major outside broadcast. Scott might have been at Eurovision, but his show’s instinct for unnecessary plans remained intact.
