Charlie Simpson’s appearance was a major event for Chris, who happily admitted that Busted’s “Sleeping with the Light On” ranked among his all-time favourite songs. The team made a point of telling Charlie just how seriously Chris took that claim, before the conversation moved into the sort of warm, faintly chaotic interview the programme did best.
Earlier, Beccy’s confession that she had used a different hairdresser was still producing listener responses. The team had treated a haircut elsewhere as the salon equivalent of cheating, and callers described travelling remarkable distances or inventing excuses simply to avoid upsetting their regular hairdresser.
Scott found the level of guilt both understandable and absurd. Beccy insisted she had not meant to betray anyone, only to get a trim when her usual appointment was unavailable, while Chris took pleasure in making the whole thing sound like a relationship breakdown conducted through scissors and shampoo.
There was also a briskly dismissive Dear Scott discussion about fathers wearing socks with sandals, socks with slippers, or a baseball cap with a woolly hat. The studio’s answer was unequivocal, though the programme was just as interested in the listener’s determination to seek formal radio approval before confronting the wardrobe issue.
Charlie later helped turn a listener’s words into a Charlie Simpson-style song. The result was intentionally makeshift, but that was part of its appeal: Scott, Beccy and Chris were delighted by the idea of giving an ordinary message the full dramatic treatment of a guest musician who had already supplied one of Chris’s most treasured pop memories.
