Scott celebrates Cornwall, the Teen Awards and Joe Jonas’s headline song
Scott returned from running the Eden half marathon convinced that Cornwall was his new favourite place. The crowd had been promised a Cornish pasty and a pint at the finish line, which he felt was a far better incentive than most races could offer, while his hotel sent him away with fudge because he had missed dessert. He was also still feeling the run in his legs as he came back to the Breakfast Show.
The previous day’s Radio 1 Teen Awards had left listeners buzzing. One caller, Lily, described screaming through One Direction’s appearance and seeing Rizzle Kicks, Cher Lloyd, Ed Sheeran and Pixie Lott, while Scott reminded people that the performances would be available via the red button. The show also picked up on Dermot O’Leary using the programme’s “Why are you so fit?” line during The X Factor.
Dev joined the programme to talk about a wrestling match he had managed to arrange for himself after mocking an amateur wrestler called Cowboy with a K. He was preparing for a tag bout in Newcastle with Alesha Dixon as his manager, a Secret Agent Man entrance theme and a rather optimistic confidence that his recent training might protect him from Cowboy’s much larger partner.
Joe Jonas was the day’s guest, arriving with stories from The X Factor and a surprisingly chaotic cooking past. He admitted he had once called contestant Janet Devlin “Lucy”, and told Scott that a chef hired while the Jonas brothers were recording had put carrots in everything before disappearing because he had apparently gone to jail. Joe said he now liked making fish tacos and Italian food, even if he had once used a cheese grater the wrong way round in front of Mario Batali.
The interview returned to Joe’s beloved comic headline song, made from tabloid-style phrases including “I’m so fat, I broke the toilet” and “I fell for a sexy robot”. He also revealed that he, his band, dancers and tour manager had become so obsessed with Cher Lloyd’s Swagger Jagger that it made its way into their pre-show prayer. Scott delighted in the absurdity, and Joe left promising to return with the song’s fan-made signs still appearing at his gigs.
