Grimmy gives London Fashion Week a front-row celebrity ranking
On his final Friday covering Scott’s show, Nick Grimshaw had the rare pleasure of a normal Friday off from his own usual schedule, which made being at work feel oddly exciting. He had spent the morning on Chris Moyles’s programme talking about the Radio 1 Teen Awards, despite having had only a few hours’ sleep after a night out.
The Teen Awards line-up was the day’s big plug: One Direction, Jason Derulo, Pixie Lott, The Wombats and other guests were set for Wembley on 9 October, with Grimmy and Mollie King hosting. He was particularly amused by the idea of teenage fans having to explain their banners to their parents, and by the silent lack of enthusiasm from his own teenage niece.
Gemma Cairney from 1Xtra arrived to talk about taking her programme to London Fashion Week. She wanted to bring the gossip, backstage pressure and arguments about fashion to radio, rather than making it feel exclusive to people who could get into the shows. Grimmy, who mostly wanted an excuse to go for a drink and look at cardigans, was happy to let her explain the serious part.
That led to the game “Front Row, Second Row or Standing”, in which Gemma placed a made-up guest list at an imaginary fashion show. Beyoncé was an immediate front-row choice, Jedward were demoted to the third row, Kerry Katona was left standing and Danny DeVito was warmly welcomed at the front. The rankings were arbitrary, affectionate and exactly as silly as they needed to be.
The programme also revisited Grimmy’s appearance on the breakfast show and his accidental habit of overstaying in other presenters’ studios. He compared himself to a radio version of Jason Derulo, the guest nobody could quite get rid of, before returning to the Teen Awards pitch. It made for a light Friday handover, with fashion chat, pop-star announcements and Grimmy enjoying the freedom to turn any guest list into a game.
